Hunt for cause of massive South American power outage begins

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — As lights turned back on across Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay after a massive blackout that hit tens of millions people, authorities were still largely in the dark about what caused the collapse of the interconnected grid and were tallying the damage from the unforeseen disaster.

Argentine President Mauricio Macri promised a thorough investigation into what he called an “unprecedented” outage, one that raised questions about flaws in South America’s grid, which connects many of the region’s largest countries.

Gloria Vanderbilt, heiress, jeans queen, dies at 95

NEW YORK (AP) — Gloria Vanderbilt, the intrepid heiress, artist and romantic who began her extraordinary life as the “poor little rich girl” of the Great Depression, survived family tragedy and multiple marriages and reigned during the 1970s and ‘80s as a designer jeans pioneer, died Monday at the age of 95.

City renews agreements

Contracts to be approved at public meetiing

The city is renewing their joint service agreements for the upcoming fiscal year.

An ordinance up for adoption on June 25 would renew the city’s annual joint service agreements with city and parish entities for the 2019-2020 fiscal year.

“This is just standard housekeeping,” said Jennings Mayor Henry Guinn. “The city enters into many agreements on an annual basis.”

Ladies who use the park for tennis practice have noticed how many children have been enjoying the newly renovated basketball court at the Cutting Park.

“The new top of the line court is bringing droves of children out to play,” said resident Heloise Cassidy. “They seem to be enjoying themselves so much and I think that is worthy of some attention.”

Recently, the City of Jennings and the Department of Parks and Recreation installed maroon and grey plastic tiles and brand new professional-grade basketball goals. LED lighting was added at the park as well as new fencing.

WELSH - One young man has gone above and beyond and has met all the requirements to become an Eagle Scout. He will become the first to receive the recognition that Troop 29 has seen since the Town of Welsh re-chartered the group in 2011.

Erick Lawrence, 18, will be honored at a reception in August. His mother, Tina Lawrence, said he has been an active member of the troop since he was about seven years old.

EHS: Year two in Bruchhaus era

ELTON – Heading into the second year of the Donnie Bruchhaus regime in Elton, a host of new faces will grace the sidelines and playing field for the Indians. Although Bruchhaus said the names on paper may not be as attractive as they have been in the past, the second-year Head Coach explained he’s excited at what he’s seen so far heading into summer workouts, and eventually into fall camp.

Jennings Bronco All-Stars grab third-place finish in Rayne Tourney

RAYNE – The Jennings Bronco All-Stars turned in a third-place performance at the annual Frog City PONY Tune-Up Tournament this past weekend. The Jennings Stars blasted Crowley 13-6 and Broussard 15-0 in Pool Play games on Saturday to advance into bracket play on Sunday. Jennings again hammered Crowley 11-3 in the first game, but fell to Kaplan in the semi-finals by a count of 6-4.

Strong finish not enough for Woods at US Open

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — The crowd was roaring, the birdies were dropping and Tiger Woods looked like his vintage self for the final 12 holes of the U.S. Open.

The problem for Woods was what happened on the first 60 holes.

Woods salvaged an otherwise disappointing weekend at Pebble Beach by birdieing six of his final 12 holes Sunday to finish the tournament at 2-under par, far behind the top contenders on a weekend made for low scores.

A Mass of Christian burial for Jeanelle Marie Miller of Jennings will be held at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church in Jennings Monday, June 17, 2019, at 11 a.m., with Father Charles McMillin officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home in Jennings today, Sunday, June 16, 2019, from 2:30-9 p.m., with a rosary recited at 6 p.m. Visitation will resume from 8 a.m. until the time of her funeral mass.

Jeanelle will be laid to rest in St. Joseph Cemetery.
