San Francisco moves closer to nation’s first e-cigarette ban

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco supervisors moved a step closer Tuesday to becoming the first city in the U.S. to ban all sales of electronic cigarettes to crack down on youth vaping.

Supervisors unanimously approved a ban on the sale and distribution of e-cigarettes. They also endorsed a ban on manufacturing of e-cigarettes on city property. The measures will require a subsequent vote before becoming law.

“We spent the ‘90s battling big tobacco, and now we see its new form in e-cigarettes,” Supervisor Shamann Walton said.

EPA close to gutting Obama rule on coal power plants

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is close to completing one of its biggest rollbacks of environmental rules, replacing a landmark Obama-era effort that sought to wean the nation’s electrical grid off coal-fired power plants and their climate-damaging pollution.

The final Trump administration replacement rule, expected as soon as this week, instead would give individual states wide discretion to decide whether to require limited efficiency upgrades at individual coal-fired power plants.

Forty evacuated after attack on Iraq Exxon site

BAGHDAD (AP) — An Iraqi intelligence officer says 40 workers for the energy giant Exxon Mobil Corp. have been evacuated from an oildrilling site in southern Iraq after they came under rocket fire.

The officer tells The Associated Press that security reinforcements have been deployed to the site after a rocket hit before dawn Wednesday near the location of the Iraqi workers, wounding three. Iraqi officials said a Katyusha rocket hit the site in southern Basra province, striking a camp housing workers for Exxon Mobil and other foreign companies.

Edwards signs $30B budget; touts teacher raises

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Saying “a great education cures a lot of ills,” Gov. John Bel Edwards on Tuesday signed Louisiana’s $30 billion operating budget at a Baton Rouge elementary school where he hailed the first statewide public school teacher raise in a decade.

The 2019-20 budget starting July 1 contains increases for public elementary and secondary schools, colleges and universities, early learning programs, health care services and public safety programs.

ELTON - A learning experience for all involved, Camp Coushatta will continue until Wednesday, July 10. The purpose of the camp is to teach both Coushatta youth and children of other cultures about the Native American way of life. “The camp offers a unique hands-on experience where customs and culture are shared in an effort to keep the heritage alive,” said Director of Social Services Rayne Langley. There is no charge to check the camp out and registration is not required. “The day camp is held twice a week, from 9 a.m. until noon on Tuesdays and Wednesdays,” he said.
