Republicans face tough vote on budget bill

WASHINGTON (AP) — A hard-won, warts-and-all budget pact between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Donald Trump is facing a key vote in the GOP-held Senate, with many conservatives torn between supporting the president and risking their political brand with an unpopular vote to add $2 trillion or more to the government’s credit card.

North Korea launches two short-range missiles, Seoul says

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s military said North Korea conducted its second weapons test in less than a week Wednesday, firing two short-range ballistic missiles off its east coast in a move observers said could be aimed at boosting pressure on the United States as the rivals struggle to set up fresh nuclear talks.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement that the missiles were launched from Wonsan, a city the North pushes as a vacation destination but that it also uses as a regular launch site.

Leroy and Joetta (Bussy) LaPoint celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary today. The couple was married at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Lake Arthur. Their children include Troy LaPoint of Scott, Scott and Paula Helling and Eric and Krisha LaPoint of Jennings, L.T. and Kellie King of Westlake and Mendy LaPoint of Jennings.

Sanders, Warren clash with moderates over ‘Medicare for All’

DETROIT (AP) — The signature domestic proposal by the leading progressive candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination came under withering attack from moderates in a debate that laid bare the struggle between a call for revolutionary policies and a desperate desire to defeat President Donald Trump.

Standing side by side at center stage on Tuesday, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren slapped back against their more cautious rivals who ridiculed “Medicare for All” and warned that “wish-list economics” would jeopardize Democrats’ chances for taking the White House in 2020.

Hardly a week goes by when we pick up the newspaper or tune into one form of media or another and read or hear of another mass shooting. This past week saw a shooting somewhere in Brooklyn whereby one was killed and at least 11 others wounded at something called the “Old Timers’ Festival.” Then there was a shooting at the Gilroy, California, Garlic Festival where three were killed, including a 6-year-old boy, and 15 others were wounded. Those stats may change by the time this is published.

Calif. festival killer’s motive still a mystery

GILROY, Calif. (AP) — The 19-yearold gunman who opened fire at a Northern California food festival was “kind of a loner” and much of his life was shrouded in mystery, the FBI said Tuesday as investigators searched for a motive.

Police believe Santino William Legan fired randomly Sunday, killing three people, after cutting through a fence to get into the Gilroy Garlic Festival. Officers patrolling the popular event responded within a minute and killed him.

Leblanc serves Hathaway High School for over 45 years

HATHAWAY - Following in his own father’s footsteps, one Jeff Davis Parish resident has made a longterm career out of getting students to school.

Bus driver Peter Leblanc is will soon see his fortysixth first day of school.

“My father drove a bus for Hathaway High School for 38 and a half years,” said Leblanc. “When it came time for him to retire, I filled his position and took over his route.”

Leblanc has continued to transport students to the same school, following the same route for all these years and said its not the pay that keeps him driving.

Iota reloaded again in 2019

IOTA – The Iota High School Bulldogs turned in a magical 2018 season by going undefeated in the regular season, winning a District 5-3A championship and reaching the semi-finals of the Class 3A state playoffs, one game shy of playing the Mercedes Benz Superdome. However, the Bulldogs are not just content on being a oneyear wonder, and return valuable pieces to a puzzle that could have them sitting atop the ranks in Class 3A.
