Louisiana crops highlight field tour for government agency representatives

BUNKIE — State and federal agency representatives attended a crops tour held by the LSU AgCenter on July 25 to give them idea of the agricultural diversity in central Louisiana.

The tour started near Bunkie at the James Deshotel sweet potato farm followed by a stop at the Todd Steele tree nursery. The tour then traveled to the Charlie Fontenot farm near Lebeau to hear about rice farming, stopped at the Lowrey cattle operation and ended near Melville at the Cannatella farm to get an overview of sugarcane farming.

LDWF sets 2019-20 oyster season

Last week, at its monthly meeting, the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission set the 2019-20 oyster season based on the annual oyster stock assessment provided by Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries biologists and comments received from members of the public, including the oyster industry.

The Calcasieu Lake Public Oyster Area will open solely for sacking of market size oysters one half-hour before sunrise on Friday, Nov. 1, 2019.

Retirement comes quickly, so plan wisely

For those several years or decades away from retirement, thinking of how you will provide for your needs or the needs of your spouse or family may not be a priority. Time flies when you’re working the years away, however, and retirement planning is not something any person, even young adults, should put off until tomorrow.

Local discusses video game violence

Dear Editor,

With regard to the recent editorial regarding video game violence, I would like to clear the record by stating that being blindly lead, as the author calls it, can go both ways. With regard to her assertion that there is research that has “repeatedly debunked” the claim that video games are linked to increased violence, I’ll reference the following:

“The affects of violent video game habits on adolescent hostility, aggressive behaviors and school performance,” Journal of Adolescence.

My sister and I randomly tell one another what we do not want to happen to our remains, during services or regarding any memorials once we are dead. Unless we die together, one sister is tasked with enforcing the other’s final wishes.

Walmart pulls violent game displays; no change on gun sales

(AP) - Walmart is removing from its stores nationwide signs, displays or videos that depict violence following a mass shooting at one of its stores in Texas, though it has not changed its policy on gun sales.

The retailer instructed employees in an internal memo to remove any marketing material, turn off or unplug video game consoles that show violent games — specifically Xbox and PlayStation consoles, and to monitor and turn off any violence depicted on screens in its electronics departments.

Lawyer suing league relieves Saints from subpoena

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A Louisiana lawyer suing the NFL over the failure to call a crucial penalty in a January playoff game said Friday he won’t force the New Orleans Saints to comply with a subpoena for records regarding the game.

Antonio LeMon released a letter to team officials saying he and three fellow ticket-holders suing the NFL don’t want the subpoena to distract the Saints organization from the upcoming football season.

Jermy Tavon Freeney, 23, of Jennings, was charged with domestic abuse battery with child endangerment and domestic abuse battery.

SOUTHERN PRESIDENT TO SPEAK AT JEFF DAVIS SCHOOL DEDICATION

Dr. Felton G. Clark, president of Southern University, Scotlandville, will deliver the main address at dedication ceremonies at the new $366,000 Jeff Davis High School here Sunday.

The dedication and open house program will get underway at 3 p.m. in the school gym-auditorium.

The modern building, located on South Cutting Avenue here, was opened for the first time in September. It has a student body of 320 youngsters in grades 8 through 12 and a faculty of 15 including principal, Wilbert D. Rochelle.
