What a difference winning makes. After the 41-21 loss to St. Louis last week many fans thought we might not win another game. There was gloom and doom talk. We turned the ball over too much. We gave up big plays and couldn’t seem to get off the field on third down. There were concerns that fans would not show up. To be honest, I had some concerns also.

Most states not giving driver’s license data to Washington

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — An effort by the U.S. Census Bureau to collect state driver’s license records as part of President Donald Trump’s order to gather citizenship information has been a bust so far.

As of Wednesday, the vast majority of state motor vehicle agencies had not agreed to share their records with the bureau, according to an Associated Press survey of the 50 states. The effort over the past couple of months has alarmed civil rights groups, which see it as part of a backdoor move by the Trump administration to reduce the political power of minorities.

Seeing rural Arkansas through different eyes

When it comes to chronicling the bumpkins of darkest Arkansas, New York Times magazine writer Monica Potts is working in a long tradition. Mark Twain got there first in “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” His portrait of slack-jawed “Arkansaw lunkheads” watching dog fights in ramshackle riverside towns fixed the region’s image for more than a century.

I am not PC (politically correct) beyond what this newspaper forces me to be. Though I am an unpaid guest columnist for the Jennings Daily News, I am still controlled by the standards set forth by the owners/managers of this venue. Cool weather brings risks of CO poisoning

As cooler weather appears in the parish, using fuel-burning heat sources increase the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. While these devices provide comfort from the cold, thorough precautions are needed to protect against this silent killer.

CO is a colorless and odorless gas whose symptoms mimic those of the flu. Each year, CO poisoning is the cause of 450 deaths due to accidental exposure, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease and Control (CDC).

Grim find: 39 dead in 1 of UK’s worst trafficking cases

LONDON (AP) — Investigators were trying to piece together the movements of a large cargo truck found Wednesday containing the bodies of 39 people in one of Britain’s worst people smuggling tragedies.

Police initially said the truck had traveled through Ireland and then to Wales via ferry, but that theory changed Wednesday afternoon when Essex police in England said they believe the truck went from the port of Zeebrugge in Belgium to Purfleet, England.

Police did not explain the change from the route explained at a news conference Wednesday morning.

Soto, Nationals top Cole, Astros 5-4 in World Series opener

HOUSTON (AP) — Juan Soto and the Washington Nationals quickly derailed the Cole Express.

A 20-year-old prodigy with a passion for the big moment, Soto homered onto the train tracks high above the left field wall and hit a two-run double as the Nationals tagged Gerrit Cole and the Houston Astros 5-4 Tuesday night in the World Series opener.

“After the first at-bat, I just said, ‘It’s another baseball game,’” Soto said. “In the first at-bat, I’m not going to lie, I was a little bit shaking in my legs.”

YELLOW RAILS & RICE

Bird and agriculture enthusiasts will once again visit the rice fields in the Thornwell area for the Yellow Rails and Rice Festival (YRARF), which has been slated to begin at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30 and last through Sunday, Nov. 3.

This unique festival offers combine rides as the rice is cut to flush the elusive Yellow Rail from the fields.

The first YRARF took place in 2008 and coordinator Donna L. Dittmann said it has grown into much more since then.

LA man sets truck on fire

LAKE ARTHUR - A man has been arrested for setting fire to his girlfriend’s truck while it was parked near an occupied bar.

Scottie Allemand, 47, was booked into the Regional Consolidated Jail on one count of aggravated arson, according to State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFM) Public Affairs Director Ashley Rodrigue.

On the evening of Saturday, Oct.19, Rodrigue said the Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Office (JDSO) contacted the SFM to assist with the investigation of a vehicle fire located in the parking lot of a business in the 700 block of La. 26 in Lake Arthur.
