Autoworkers from closed plants fight new GM contract

DETROIT (AP) — If they can close our plant, they can close yours, too.

That’s the message from workers at three shuttered General Motors factories that didn’t get new products under the tentative contract agreement reached last week between GM and the United Auto Workers, who have been on strike against the company across the U.S. for over six weeks now.

LAKE ARTHUR – Four standouts have joined the Tigers’ Hall of Fame here, including coach Roderick Williams, Coy Guidry, Gabby Guidry LeJeune and Trey Thomas.

“Coach Will” was part Lake Arthur High School (LAHS) varsity basketball, football and track, as well as junior high boys basketball and football, from 1978 to 2011. He is currently the Tigers’ longest tenured basketball coach with 33 years of work, serving as an assistant coach for 10 years before investing 23 years as head coach.

Down multiple options, Saints coach Sean Payton got creative

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Saints’ fifth straight victory without record-setting quarterback Drew Brees was just the latest highlight in an extraordinary run for coach Sean Payton.

Even though 2017 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Alvin Kamara and starting tight end Jared Cook joined Brees as injured and unavailable, New Orleans rolled up 424 yards in a 36-25 win against Chicago that was much more lopsided than the final score indicated.

Battle of the Bows returns Nov. 2

Cajun-style fiddle players of all ages and performance levels will take the stage at the Strand Theater to tout their skills and carry on Acadian tradition.

The fifth Annual Battle of the Bows Cajun Fiddle Competition returns Saturday, Nov. 2, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Strand Theatre in Jennings. Doors open at 8 a.m.

Organizers say the competition has quickly grown in popularity, not only among the community, but also among southwest Louisiana musicians.

The Head Start program was started in 1965 to provide comprehensive health, nutrition and educational opportunities for children and families across the U.S.

According to the National Head Start Association (NHSA), October is Head Start Awareness Month, a time to build knowledge of and support for Head Start’s whole-child and whole-community approach to supporting families on their path to success.

Millions of American children are in desperate need of the window of opportunity for success in life that Head Start provides.

Buyers beware of flooded vehicles

Often, when a deal is too good to believe, there’s a reason. Buyers are being asked to beware when purchasing a used vehicle that it has not been flooded.

Commissioner Jim Donelon is reminding Louisiana consumers to be vigilant when purchasing used vehicles that may have been flooded in Texas as a result of Tropical Storm Imelda.

These damaged vehicles are being sold at auction and unscrupulous sellers may ship automobiles, trucks, boats and RV’s to other states and not disclose their origin to unsuspecting buyers.

Canada’s Trudeau wins second term but nation more divided

TORONTO (AP) — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau won a second term in a strongerthan-expected showing in Canada’s national elections, claiming a “clear mandate” Tuesday despite a Parliament and nation increasingly fractured along regional lines.

Trudeau’s Liberal Party took the most seats in Parliament but lost its majority in Monday’s balloting. That means it will have to rely on an opposition party to pass legislation.

Pumpkin Loaf

Nonstick cooking spray 4 eggs 3 1/2cups flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 2 teaspoons cinnamon 1 teaspoon nutmeg 1 teaspoon salt 2 sticks butter 2 cups sugar 1 can (15 ounces) pumpkin puree 1 cup chocolate chips 1 cup walnuts, chopped

Heat oven to 350 F.

Prepare loaf and muffin pans with nonstick cooking spray.
