$260M deal averts first federal opioid trial

CLEVELAND (AP) — The nation’s three biggest drug distributors and a major drugmaker reached an 11th-hour, $260 million settlement over the toll of the opioids in two Ohio counties, averting what would have been the first federal trial over the crisis.

The settlement was announced just hours before the trial was scheduled to start, with a jury selected last week.

Public urged to practice Halloween safety

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reminds residents that Halloween decorations and costumes can sometimes pose a risk of potential danger. From costumes to decorations, everyone is advised to be mindful of a few simple guidelines.

“Halloween brings an opportunity to wear fun costumes, decorate our homes and eat too much candy,” said NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy Lorraine Carli. “However, without proper safety precautions, we run the risk of turning good times into the wrong kind of scary ones.”

Elton seeks entries for holiday parade

ELTON - The Town of Elton is seeking entries to participate in their annual Christmas Parade.

Organizer Kesia Lemoine recently announced that the parade will be taking place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, on Main Street.

Each year the town team up with the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana to put on what has become one of the largest parades in the parish with 20-30 participants each year including area churches, schools, businesses and individuals.

Funeral services for Mr. Carleis “Curley” A. Maziel, Sr., 86, will be announced by Semien-Lewis Mortuary of Jennings. Mr. Maziel entered into eternal rest Thursday, Oct.17, 2019, in his residence.

WPD updates Welsh shooting

WELSH - A juvenile is currently in custody at a detention center after firing a gun during an altercation last week in Welsh.

On Friday at approximately 12:08 a.m., Police Chief Marcus Crochet said officers were dispatched to a Pecan Acres Trailer Park in reference to shots fired.

Upon arrival, officers spoke to a victim who identified the suspect by name, who was determined to be a juvenile.

The victim advised officers that he had been involved in a physical altercation with the same person about an hour prior at a residence in Willow Wood Subdivision.
