Meeting tonight on school name

A committee is meeting this evening to hear public comments on suggested names for the new Jennings elementary campus.

The Jeff Davis School Board Building and Grounds Committee will meet at 5:15 p.m. in the Jennings Elementary (JES) band room. The committee consists of chairman Jimmy Segura, Jason Bouley, Malon Dobson, Terry Leger and David Troutman.

Tigers roll Red Devils

LAKE ARTHUR – The Lake Arthur Tigers ran over, around and through the visiting Port Barre Red Devils here Friday night on their way to a convincing 48-0 win in a District 6-2A contest. The Tigers move to 4-3 for the season and 1-1 in league play.

The hosts made quick work of the contest, as they raced to a 30-0 lead by intermission, allowing JV players the opportunity to see plenty of action for the remainder of the game.

Fumbles haunt Hounds

WELSH – A lost fumble at the goal line to end the first half doomed the Welsh Greyhounds here Friday night as the LaGrange Gators claimed an 8-7 win over the Hounds in a defensive struggle.

Welsh already held a 7-0 advantage and was looking to add to their lead, but the ball hit the ground somewhere between the one foot mark and the goal line. The visitors recovered to keep their deficit to just 7-0 at the break.

JENNINGS ALIVE FESTIVAL SET FOR OCT. 26

Final preparations are under way as organizers ready for the upcoming Jennings Alive Fall Arts and Crafts Festival on Saturday, Oct. 26.

“The festival will begin at 9 a.m.,” said city event organizer Lin Fake. “We will have live music, great fun for all and good food, too.”

Vendors may arrive as early as 7 a.m. to set up their booths and all vehicles must be moved from the booth to designated parking areas by 8:45 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23 is the final day for vendors to register a booth.

US takes step to require DNA samples from asylum seekers

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is planning to collect DNA samples from asylumseekers and other migrants detained by immigration officials and will add the information to a massive FBI database used by law enforcement hunting for criminals, a Justice Department official said.

The Justice Department on Monday issued amended regulations that would mandate DNA collection for almost all migrants who cross between official entry points and are held even temporarily.

Saturday last day to register to vote online

This is the last week to register to vote using the Geaux Vote Online Registration in the Gubernatorial runoff election on Nov. 16.

Voters already registered should make sure their voter registration is up-to-date so that there aren’t any problems on when voting.

Changes to the voter record such as an address or party change can be made by visiting the Jeff Davis Registrar of Voters (ROV) Office in Jennings.

JDP principal, teaching standouts named

Principals, teachers and support personnel are being recognized for their contributions to Jeff Davis Parish schools.

The school board on Friday released a list of its parish employees of year, individuals who will now be considered for regional honors.

“We’re very proud of these individuals,” Kirk Credeur, superintendent of schools, said. “They have distinguished themselves as the best of the best. Our school system depends upon them greatly as leaders at individual schools and within the district.”
