TS Nestor forms, threatening US Gulf Coast

MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Nestor formed in the Gulf of Mexico on Friday, threatening the northern Gulf Coast with rising seawater, high winds and heavy rains.

The National Hurricane Center said high winds and dangerous storm surge were likely along parts of the northern Gulf Coast, plus heavy rain that could help a parched region dealing with a drought.

GEAPS endows LSU College of Agriculture scholarship

BATON ROUGE — The Gulf South Chapter of the Grain Elevator and Processing Society (GEAPS) is endowing a scholarship in the LSU College of Agriculture.

The GEAPS-Gulf South Chapter has supported a scholarship in the college for four years. Roy Baker, chapter president and operations manager at Zen-Noh Grain Corporation, said the chapter recently had a surplus and decided the money would be best served helping students.

“Endowing a scholarship is a way to invest the money and help students that might impact our industry in the future,” Baker said.

Stay updated on local Halloween, harvest events

Each year, the National Retail Federation tracks Halloween trends. The figures and statistics shared by the NRF and other organizations paint a picture of just how popular Halloween can be.

• Consumers will spend an estimated $9 billion on Halloween. The average, American will spend $86.79 on the festivities, according to the NRF.

• The U.S. Census Bureau indicates that there are 41.1 million potential trick-ortreaters aged 5 to 14.

The prison blues just aren’t the same

Imagine somewhere between Shawshank and a Motel 6.

You’ll come up with something pretty close to the Beaumont Federal Correctional Institute in Texas.

It’s a medium security prison, and we recently learned how mediocre its security really is. Inmates tend to escape and in perhaps the most interesting twist in the history of prison breaks, they come back.

It seems four inmates – that we know of – have pretty much been coming and going as they pleased. They walk out, buy liquor, cigarettes, cellphones and other contraband they can move in the joint, and they return.

In the wake of the #MeToo movement, “he said, she said,” is quickly becoming, “she said, he cringed and remained silent.” Another variation is, “she said, he apologized profusely and then resigned.”

This would describe former Sen. Al Franken, who did what he thought was the honorable thing even though many of his former colleagues now regret forcing him out of office (except for former Democratic presidential candidate Kirsten Gillibrand, emphasis on “former”).

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The borders of the Who Dat Nation extend far beyond the top row of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, far beyond Sulphur and Bastrop and Bogalusa, and far beyond the Lower 48 for that matter.

In fact, there’s a colony of Who Dats in Anchorage, Alaska — 4,344 miles from Poydras Street.

The Anchorage Who Dats gather on Sundays in a log cabin-style saloon called the Peanut Farm, where they are sequestered in a special room all their own, with a big projector screen and several small televisions.
