New drugs show rare promise against advanced breast cancer

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Doctors on Wednesday reported unusually good results from tests of two experimental drugs in women with an aggressive form of breast cancer that had spread widely and resisted many previous treatments.

One drug showed particular ability to reach tumors in the brain, which are notoriously tough to treat.

The other pairs a sort of homing device for cancer cells with a payload of chemotherapy that’s released when it reaches its target.

Six killed in New Jersey gun battle, including police officer

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — Six people, including a police officer and three bystanders, were killed in a furious gun battle Tuesday that filled the streets of Jersey City with the sound of heavy fire for hours, authorities said.

The dead included the two gunmen, Jersey City Police Chief Michael Kelly said.

After slaying its fourth Top-10 team since beginning the playoffs four weeks ago in New Orleans last Friday night, the No. 23 Jennings Bulldogs will have to chop down one more in order to hoist the coveted Class 3A State Championship trophy. However, it’s the biggest giant of them all, according to the Class 3A Power Rankings in No. 1 St. James High School. The Wildcats have spent pretty much all season sitting at the top of the polls, and it comes with good reason when viewing the schedule they have played.

Foo Fact of the Game: Once again, the game came down to a 2-point conversion. Jennings was able to stop McDonogh 35 on one of their two two-point conversions to give the Dogs a 21-20 semi-final win over the Roneagles and advance to the Class 3A state championship game.

KINDER - The Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana hosted current American Bar Association (ABA) President Judy Perry Martinez Tuesday in Kinder.

Martinez, of New Orleans, spoke at a luncheon at the Koasati Pines Veranda.

City seeks to upgrade I-10 lighting

The city is looking to upgrade the lighting in the city limits along the I-10 corridor.

The Jennings City Council adopted a resolution Tuesday to seek funding and permission from the state to assume all legal liability, maintenance and operating costs of the lighting systems from Exit 64 (La. 26) to Exit 65 (La. 97).

LA, Welsh to host holiday festivities

Christmas festivities have kicked off across the parish. This coming weekend, both Welsh and Lake Arthur will host a variety of activities that are open to the public.

The Town of Welsh and Welsh Merchants Association will sponsor activities Friday, Dec. 13. chili cook-off contest will take place. There is a $5 entry fee for those who would like to participate. Registration forms are available at Welsh City Hall. Prepared dishes can be dropped off from 3-4 p.m. at the Old Dollar General Store. Winners will be announced after the parade.

Local authorities seek missing juvenile

Law enforcement received a report Tuesday that a juvenile who had escaped from a detention center had barricaded himself in a home in Jennings. However, after arriving at the home, authorities learned he was not at the residence. The juvenile was one of seven that escaped from the Acadiana Center for Youth in November.
