Glitter and Glue to hold Starry Nativity workshop

Seats are still available for an upcoming workshop at the Zigler Art Museum. On Thursday, Dec. 19 at 6 p.m., Glitter and Glue Crafts will meet for a Van Gogh inspired paint-along.

“The Starry Nativity piece will be created using an abstract painting method similar to that used by Van Gogh for his famous painting known as Starry Night,” said instructor Jessica Trahan. “Seats are very limited so interested parties must pre-register.”

The class is open to all ages, kids and adults, but Trahan said she recommends ages 10 and over due to the level of difficulty.

LAKE ARTHUR - It’s with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Betty Jean Delcambre Constance announces her passing from this life on Dec. 9, 2019, at the age of 72.

Funeral services will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Lake Arthur today, Thursday, Dec. 12, 2019, at 1 p.m., with Father Jay Alexuis officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be held at the funeral home today, Thursday, Dec. 12, from 9 a.m. until the time of her service at 1 p.m.

Burial will follow in Andrus Cove Cemetery.

Free hepatitis C screenings at 10 area Walmart stores

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — As Louisiana broadens its efforts to combat hepatitis C in hopes of largely eliminating the deadly viral infection, the health department announced Tuesday that 10 Walmart locations around the state will offer free screenings for the infectious, liverdamaging disease.

Walmart will offer the no-cost hepatitis C screenings every Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. until Feb. 1 at the pharmacies in stores located in Vivian, Ville Platte, New Iberia, Raceland, Oak Grove, Amite, Monroe, Denham Springs, Opelousas and Morgan City.

Habetz elected during county committee election

Jeff Davis Parish U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) announced that William Paul Habetz of Jennings was elected to represent his local administrative area (LAA#1) during the recent county committee election.

Barbara Williams of Lake Arthur will serve as the first alternate.

La. House GOP urged to pick leader without Democrats

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Two top Louisiana Republicans are urging GOP state House members to pick their next speaker without input from Democrats.

U.S. Sen. John Kennedy and Attorney General Jeff Landry sent Republican House members a letter suggesting that Democrats shouldn’t have a say in the majority-GOP House’s top leadership job for the new four-year term that begins in January.

Kennedy and Landry oversee a PAC that helped elect several members of the state House.

Holiday cheer is being spread at the Council on Aging (COA). Dec. 6, senior citizens enjoyed a Christmas party and meal sponsored by Entergy and peach cobbler provided by Volunteers for Family and Community. Wednesday, the COA opened its doors to receive donations as part of KLFY’s Foodnet Food for Families Food Drive. Individuals, businesses and civic groups supplied non-perishable food items to fill the COA’s pantry to help those in need in the parish. Jennings Rotary Club members were just a few of the locals who gave needed items.

Watchdog: ‘Basic, fundamental errors’ in Russia probe
