LA town attorney attends last council meeting

LAKE ARTHUR - After announcing his upcoming retirement earlier this year, Town Attorney Bennett Lapoint was present for his last town council meeting this past Tuesday.

“It’s hard to believe it has been 38 years that I have served this community,” said Lapoint. “When I think about it, I have spent half my life as your attorney.”

He said it has been a privilege and an honor to work for the community where he was born and raised.

“I want to thank the council for allowing me to serve,” said Lapoint. “Being allowed to serve this last year has meant a lot to me.”

NAUW making their mark in community

The National Association of University Women (NAUW) is making their mark on their community here, always there to fill in the gap wherever they might be needed.

Thursday the group donated a large number of clothing and personal hygiene items to Jeff Davis Communities Against Domestic Abuse (CADA).

Legal Advocate Ora Randolph recommends that any women looking to clean out their closet considering donating items to CADA.

“In many cases, the people have nothing but the clothes on their backs when they arrive,” she said.

NEW ORLEANS - It’s taken 27 years, but the Jennings Bulldogs found their way back to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome Friday night by knocking off its fourth straight Top 10 team in No. 6 McDonogh 35 by a final of 21-20 at Pan American Stadium. The Dogs led for most of the contest, but fought off a late Roneagles rally to run out the clock and punch their ticket to the Class 3A State Championship game.

The No.23-seeded Bulldogs will now take on No. 1 St. James Friday night in the second game of the day set for 7 p.m., following the Class 2A title game between Ferriday and Many.

Heisman chase and playoff race cross paths in champ weekend

(AP) - The Heisman Trophy chase and playoff race have become intertwined.

Since the College Football Playoff started in 2014, four of five Heisman winners have played on teams selected to play in the semifinals. That makes championship weekend especially important as voters focus on contenders making closing arguments.

Bulldogs Top Greyhounds 49-26

The Jennings Lady Bulldogs pasted the Welsh Lady Greyhounds by a final of 49-26 in the opening round of the Elton “rock the Rim” Classic Thursday night. The win moves the Lady Dogs to an impressive 7-1 to start the 2019 season.

The Elton Indians blasted th Kinder Yellow Jackets by a final of 60-27 in the first round of the Elton HIgh School “Rock the Rim” Clasic Thursday night by a final of 60-27.With the win, the Indians moved to 3-1 on the early season.

Saints, 49ers clash with top NFC seeding in the balance

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Drew Brees and the Saints are ready to up the ante.

A third-straight NFC South title has been wrapped up. Next on the list is a second straight No. 1 overall playoff seed in the NFC, a goal New Orleans (10-2) can get closer to accomplishing on Sunday when the San Francisco 49ers (10-2) visit the site of their last Super Bowl appearance.

“We all know what this game means,” Brees said.

And so do the Niners, who had the inside track to the top seed until they lost last week at Baltimore.

Brewer leads SE Louisiana past Southern-New Orleans 79-74

HAMMOND, La. (AP) — Ty Brewer had 27 points plus 12 rebounds as Southeastern Louisiana edged past Southern-New Orleans 79-74 on Friday night. Pape Diop added 25 points for the Lions.

The Lions led 67-58 before SUNO ran off eight consecutive points to trail by one with 4:22 remaining. The Lions responded with their own 8-0 run to lead 75-66 with 37 seconds remaining.

Interstate 10 construction begins here

Work has begun on a segment of Interstate Highway 10 near Jennings, according to an announcement by Highway Director Ray W. Burgess.

A $1,629,161 contract was awarded to the Southern Paving and Construction Corp. of Baton Rouge for 1.5 miles of new Interstate construction. Burgess said that the Interstate 10 work begins at the east end of the State Route 26 interchange on the north corporate limit of Jennings, then proceeds southeasterly along a new location 1.5 miles to the State Route 97 interchange on the east corporate limits of Jennings.

Closing of Fenton High studied

Jeff Davis Parish School Board members discussed several options regarding the possible closing of Fenton High School in a special meeting held last night.

"No decisions will be made tonight, only options will be discussed" said Superintendent W.F. Whitford, adding students and parents need a firm decision by mid-term of this school year.

Rumors of the closing of Fenton High School have been going around the district since late spring when citizens met with school board officials line a community meeting.
