U.S. officers arrest man as one of big rum gang

JW. Scott, Jennings steamboat man, has been released on bond in the federal court following his arrest, along with many others, in sensational charges of rum running along the Louisiana Gulf Coast. Federal inspectors spent several days in Jennings last week and are known to have been closeted with several persons here who could throw light on the alleged whisky ring. Although several others were slated to be arrested, no such action has as yet been taken although sources close to the federal authorities aver that several persons in this vicinity are under investigation.

Liscomb was attacked while in bed; fled to gallery, but murderer pursued him

Ward Liscomb's death was caused by a dastardly attack on the young man by a party with a shot gun, he having been foully murdered by receiving the full effect of the loads of shot.

The name of the murder is as yet unknown, although efforts have been made by officers to ascertain the criminal who committed the deed in such a cold blooded fashion. However, Oscar Kimball, a young man who worked on the Liscomb farm, is still held under suspicion.

Better tag that dog now

Have you tagged that dog? A little shooting affray took place on Main Street Thursday in which a dog was killed. This dog was guilty of failing to take out a license to be at large. Rather, his owner was guilty of carelessness but this did not help little doggy, now deceased. Get that license.

The leaves are falling all over the state now. Gorgeous as the colors may be on the trees as they turn from green to beautiful yellows, oranges and reds, they eventually dry out, turn brown and ultimately become litter on the ground.

Selection, care are vital for Christmas trees

BATON ROUGE — As we move closer to Christmas Day, now is the time to make sure you are doing your best to keep your Christmas tree beautiful and safe.

AgCenter forestry specialist Niels de Hoop says one of his biggest concerns is not providing enough water for the tree when it’s brought into the house.

“The first night is really critical because the tree will take up a lot of water during that first night,” he said.

North Louisiana forestry forum set for Jan. 17

WEST MONROE — The LSU AgCenter will host a forestry forum Jan. 17 at the West Monroe Convention Center during the North Louisiana Agri-Business Council Ag Expo.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and the program will run from 8:30 until noon. The West Monroe Convention Center is located at 901 Ridge Ave.

Program topics will cover a wide range of interests for timberland owners, forestry consultants and industry partners. Presentations will feature new research on Eastern Baccharis control in young bottomland hardwoods and management methods for mixed pine hardwood forests.
