Funeral services for Gregory James “Smiley” Hebert, 60, of Jennings will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home in Jennings today, Sunday, Dec. 1, 2019, at 2 p.m., with Deacon Mike Tramel officiating. A gathering of family and friends was held at the funeral home Saturday, Nov. 30, 2019, from 4:30-9 p.m., with a rosary recited at 6 p.m. by Deacon Mike Tramel. Visitation will resume today, Sunday, Dec. 1, 2019, from 9 a.m. until the time of his service at 2 p.m. Burial will follow Bertrand Cemetery. Gregory was born in Jennings on Oct. 27, 1959, to Albert Hebert and Anna Belle Crochet.

Registration opens for Welsh hunter safety course

WELSH - Registration is now open for a hunter safety course in December in Welsh.

Welsh Police Department will host the 13th annual Hunter Safety Education Program from 5-9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13 and from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14.

“The program stresses firearm safety, hunter ethics and conservation and consists of 10 hours of classroom instruction, a written final exam and participation in a field exercise,” says Welsh Police Chief Marcus Crochet.

The course is free of charge and registrants must be 10 years of age or older to sign up.

National Park Service to help plan 8 local areas in 5 states

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The National Park Service will provide consultants to help create eight local parks and other recreation and conservation areas in Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, Kentucky and Florida.

Park Service landscape architects and community planners work with local communities to help plan parks, trails, greenways and other open spaces, said Deirdre Hewitt, program manager for the park service’s Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program.

Three hurt at Texas chemical plant hit by 2 massive explosions

PORT NECHES, Texas (AP) — Two massive explosions 13 hours apart tore through a Texas chemical plant Wednesday, and one left three workers injured.

The blasts blew out windows and doors of nearby homes and prompted a mandatory evacuation of a 4-mile (7-kilometer) radius from the plant in Port Neches in Southeast Texas, about 80 miles (129 kilometers) east of Houston. Officials say they have no estimate for how long the fire will burn.

No more menthol cigarettes: New ban on tobacco, vape flavors

BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts became the first state to ban the sale of flavored tobacco and vaping products, including menthol cigarettes, after the Republican governor signed a bill Wednesday that responds to recent deaths linked to e-cigarettes and attempts to reduce their appeal to young people.

Anti-smoking groups hailed the ban signed by Gov. Charlie Baker, which outlaws the sale of flavored vaping products immediately and of menthol cigarettes starting June 1, 2020.

Ehlinger and Texas rally to 49-24 win over Texas Tech

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A season of high expectations for Texas still fell far short of its promise, and coach Tom Herman may still shake up his staff.

Yet Sam Ehlinger and the Longhorns closed out the regular season with an emphatic victory that will guarantee a winning record regardless of what happens in the bowl season.

Ehlinger passed for two touchdowns, ran for another and the Longhorns rallied from an early hole for a 49-24 win over Texas Tech on Friday.

Cardinals’ Josh Shaw suspended for betting on NFL games

(AP) - Arizona Cardinals cornerback Josh Shaw has been suspended through at least the end of the 2020 season for betting on NFL games on multiple occasions this season, the first time in more than 35 years a player has been banned for gambling.

The little-known Shaw hasn’t played for the Cardinals this season after being placed on injured reserve following an injury during the preseason.
