China to suspend US Navy visits to Hong Kong over new law

HONG KONG (AP) — China said Monday it will suspend U.S. military ship and aircraft visits to Hong Kong and sanction several American pro-democracy and human rights groups in retaliation for the signing into law of legislation supporting anti-government protests in the semi-autonomous territory.

While the nature of the sanctions remained unclear, the move followed Chinese warnings that the U.S. would bear the costs if the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act was approved.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Melania Trump is celebrating American patriotism at the White House this Christmas, incorporating red and blue into the traditional holiday green, adding a timeline of American design, innovation and architecture and studding a Christmas tree with her family’s annual ornament, the American flag.

The traditional gingerbread White House shares its stage with American landmarks including the Statue of Liberty and the Golden Gate Bridge.

New higher-speed Florida train has highest US death rate

MIAMI (AP) — After Richard Branson announced his Virgin Group would partner with Brightline, Florida’s new higher-speed passenger rail service, a train whisked the British billionaire, VIPs and journalists from Miami to West Palm Beach in just over an hour and then back, with no problems.

That was likely a great relief to railroad staff who have dealt with a higher than average number of deaths involving the sleek, neon-yellow trains, which travel at speeds of up to 79 mph (127 kph) through some of Florida’s most densely populated cities.

One dies in weekend party shooting

JPD seeks public’s help in identifying suspect

Police are asking for the public’s help in apprehending a suspect involved in a fatal shooting that took place over the weekend.

According to Police Chief Danny Semmes, Jennings Police Department (JPD) officers responded to a shooting that took place at an event hall at the 1600 block of South Main Street in Jennings during a private party.

The party, with over 150 in attendance, took place early Friday morning and ended when one man was fatally shot.

According to the United States Postal Service, each year, hundreds of thousands of children mail letters in hopes of good deliveries from the North Pole just in time for Christmas.

HATHAWAY - A Jennings man was charged over the weekend after deputies found him passed out in his vehicle at a convenience store in Hathaway.

On Friday evening, Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Office (JDSO) deputies received a call for a welfare check at the Country Mile Store located on La. 102.

“The complainant advised that there were two individuals passed out in a running vehicle in the parking lot of the store,” said JDSO Chief Deputy Chris Ivey.

Food for Families annual drive kicks off

Food banks are always looking to fill their shelves to help families, both during the holidays and throughout the year. In an effort to assist those in need, the Council on Aging (COA) and KLFY TV 10 has set a date for its annual Foodnet Food for Families Food Drive.

The COA building will once again be a drop-off location for this year’s drive.

From 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10, volunteers will be on hand accepting non-perishable food donations at 210 N. State St.

LAFAYETTE – The Lake Arthur (LA) Lady Tigers kept their undefeated in tact last week by earning a pair of big wins over 5A’s Barbe and Acadiana at the St. Thomas More (STM) Tournament. With the two wins, the Lady Tigers improved to 5-0 on the season, and will host Grand Lake tonight at Wilbert “Nookie” Moore Gymnasium on the campus of LAHS.
