It’s with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Alice Clara Jones announces her passing from this life on Jan. 10, 2020, at the age of 77.  

Funeral services will be held at Union Baptist Church in Jennings Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020, at 11 a.m., with Reverend Gerald Perkins officiating.  

Visitation will be held at the church Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020, from 9 a.m. until the time of her funeral service.

Burial will follow in Park View Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Olga Dolejsiov, 73, will be announced by Miguez Funeral Home of Jennings. Mrs. Dolejsiov passed away at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2020, in Camelot Brookside Nursing Home.

Funeral services for Melvyn Smith, 73, of Mermentau Cove will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral home in Jennings on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020, at 11 a.m., with Reverend Seth Bianchini officiating.   

A gathering of family and friends will be held at the funeral home Friday, Jan. 17,  from 5-9 p.m., and will continue Saturday, Jan. 8, from 8 a.m. until the time of his funeral service.

Burial will follow in Istre Cemetery.

Optimist Club 5K to benefit childhood cancer victims

The Jennings Optimist Club will be sponsoring a 5K run/walk with hopes of raising money for those affected by childhood cancer. The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1, beginning at 8 a.m. in Founders Park. Registration is now open.

“The Optimist International Childhood Cancer Campaign (CCC) understands the need to support young people with cancer,” said president Carolyn Barker. “Cancer is taking more young lives than asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis and AIDS combined.”

The organization would like to do their part to help find a cure and save lives.

Trump: China trade deal delivers economic justice

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump signed a trade agreement Wednesday with China that is expected to boost exports from U.S. farmers and manufacturers and is aimed at lowering tensions in a longrunning dispute between the economic powers.

Trump said during a White House ceremony that the deal is “righting the wrongs of the past.” He promoted the signing as a way of delivering economic justice for American workers and said, “We mark a sea change in international trade” with the signing.

Pelosi names Schiff, Nadler as prosecutors in impeachment trial

WASHINGTON (AP) — Speaker Nancy Pelosi named House prosecutors for President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial on Wednesday ahead of votes to send the charges to the Senate, even as new information about the president’s Ukraine efforts intensified pressure for more witnesses.

The seven-member prosecution team will be led by the chairmen of the House impeachment proceedings, Reps. Adam Schiff of the Intelligence Committee and Jerry Nadler of the Judiciary Committee, two of Pelosi’s top lieutenants for only the third presidential impeachment in the nation’s history.

NSA finds major security flaw in Windows 10, free fix issued

(AP) - The National Security Agency has discovered a major security flaw in Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system that could let hackers intercept seemingly secure communications.

But rather than exploit the flaw for its own intelligence needs, the NSA tipped off Microsoft so that it can fix the system for everyone.

Microsoft released a free software patch to fix the flaw Tuesday and credited the intelligence agency for discovering it. The company said it has not seen any evidence that hackers have used the technique.
