Ryan Matthews, 17 at the time of his arrest, was charged with the 1997 Bridge City murder of convenience store owner Tommy Vanhoose. Two eyewitnesses, when shown photos, said they thought Matthews was the shooter. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Travis Hayes, Matthews’ passenger, was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.
