Independence celebration in Lake Arthur

Preparations are being made at Lake Arthur, the Jefferson Davis "playground," for the most elaborate Fourth of July celebration ever carried out in this section. The celebration committee is making ready to accommodate several thousand people on this occasion. Extensive plans have been made and a most interesting program prepared consisting of speaking by prominent Louisianians, band concerts, ball games, automobile racing, horse racing and boat racing.

City rejoices at VE Day

Jennings celebrated the end of the war in Europe in a solemn manner today. There was no wild rejoicing as fire siren and the old wildcat siren, which itself had rung out of the end of the First World War, proclaimed to residents that peace had again come to Europe.

Ex-local pastor invents ‘Smartee’ game to build new church

EFFINGHAM, ILL. - Rev. P.W. Hayes, pastor of the Central Church of Christ, has invented a word game called "Smartee."

Lions Club proposes roadside park for tourists

The Lions Club was to meet with the city council this morning to propose the building of a roadside park for tourists in the city park on North Cutting Avenue.

Despite challenges, it’s been an amazing summer

No doubt about it, this summer has not been normal. Who could have foreseen a summer reading program that was entirely virtual? A June without summer camps or VBS. Bookmobile visits canceled and outreach to nursing homes put on hold. But despite the challenges, we managed to host some amazing talent and provide fun take-home activities every week. And best of all, we learned how to do new things.

THE HISTORY OF INDEPENDENCE DAY

Few summertime holidays elicit as much excitement as the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day in the United States. Each year, family, friends and revelers anticipate the arrival of the holiday so they can host barbecues, enjoy the sun, listen to their favorite summertime tunes, and commemorate the freedoms afforded by the monumental events that led to the holiday’s establishment.
