The Fourth of July: it wasn’t a party

When I look back to the Fourth of July during my earliest years, it wasn’t a party. There were no computergenerated displays of fireworks.

NO WEEKEND EDITION SCHEDULED

Post offices will be closed Saturday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day. Because of this, there will be no weekend edition of Jennings Daily News. The newspaper wishes a safe and happy holiday to readers.

The drive to make Washington, D.C., a state has been a favorite of some Democrats for years. Why wouldn’t it be? If enacted, a new state, formed from deepestblue D.C., would create two new Democratic senators and one new Democratic member of the House. For a Democrat, what’s not to like?
