Major college football bowl season set to kickoff Dec. 19

(AP) - The bowl season will start Dec. 19, the day most of the major college football conferences are set to play their championship games, and includes 37 games.

College football’s postseason schedule was finally set Friday. Several bowls, including the Holiday Bowl in San Diego and the Hawaii Bowl, have already called off their games for this season because of issues related to the pandemic.

Graveside services with full military honors for J. Phillip Preston, 83, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, 2020, at Barrancas National Cemetery at Pensacola Naval Air Station, with Pastor Larry Plank officiating.

Mr. Preston passed away the morning of Oct. 25, 2020, at Beehive Homes of Gulf Breeze, Fla.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Rose Lawn Funeral Home of Gulf Breeze.

Dear Editor,

I can understand why white supremacists support the president. They consider him one of them and can clearly see he shares their views. I can understand why rich people support the president. They consider him one of them and share in his love of money and know he will protect them. What I could never understand is why poor people support him. He certainly isn’t one of them and can’t relate to their struggles and plights. He’s never been poor nor had to struggle.

Have you ever noticed the beautiful red flowers that just seem to pop up out of nowhere in late summer, usually in August and September? Their bloom just so happens to coincide with hurricane season, and that is how they earned their name hurricane lily.

Iota announces 2020-21 Homecoming Court

Iota High School (IHS) kicked off Homecoming week by having the student body vote electronically for Homecoming Queen. Students were required to verify address in the log book and write their signature. They were then guided to the electronic voting computers and were able to cast their votes.

Arceneaux speaks to Welsh Rotary Club

The Rotary Club of Welsh met on Oct. 22.

The guest speaker was Karl Arceneaux, candidate for mayor of Welsh.

Final plans were made for the street drive on World Polio Day (Oct. 24). The club had a very successful street drive thanks to the citizens being very generous.

Seahawks have injury concerns on both sides for 49ers game

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks are still unsure how many healthy running backs they’ll have for Sunday’s matchup against San Francisco with three of the four on the active roster listed on the final injury report.

The Seahawks listed Chris Carson (foot) and Travis Homer (knee) as questionable, while Carlos Hyde (hamstring) was listed as doubtful on Friday. Carson and Hyde did not practice at all this week, while Homer was a limited participant on Friday.

Tragedy at Welsh due to rain

A Lake Charles man was killed early this morning when he fell as he came down from a drilling rig at the Welsh oil field.

E.J. Duplichien, a derrick man for C.B. Knox Drilling Contractors of Houston, Texas, was riding a traveling block down the rig when he slipped in the early morning rain and fell 55 feet to the platform. His skull was fractured and he died twenty minutes later.
