In our kitchen, one of my two simple bar stools lost one of its dowels. I should not be surprised because the stools are probably 30 years old and, as I well know, things can decline during three decades of life.

I could have purchased new stools to replace this undependable one and its companion, but today’s bar stools don’t always have padded seats and I rather liked that feature of these two longtime friends.

Plus, today’s bar stools often come with backs and style so they don’t fit in the small space allotted in my kitchen.

Early voting will continue until Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the Registrar of Voters, located at 302 N. Cutting Ave. in Jennings.

Welsh Rotary Club street drive to benefit World Polio Day

The Rotary Club of Welsh will hold a street drive on Saturday, Oct. 24, to raise funds for World Polio Day.

The members made this decision during their Oct. 15 meeting, which involved both virtual and in-person participation.

“Polio has been a devastating disease for many years,” said Clarence Prudhomme, Past District Governor of Rotary International. “Donating to help eradicate polio is something that Rotary does constantly.”

Rotary International, along with the World Health Organization (WHO), has already made an enormous impact on polio worldwide, he said.

Lady Marilyn “Cissie” Qualls McLeod joined her beloved husband, Bill, in Heaven on Oct. 19, 2020, at the age of 83. Cissie was known to many family and friends as Mamma McLeod, Lady Cissie, Mimi and The Mimster.

Cissie was a fifth-generation resident and a member of the A.A. Nelson family, a founding family of our community. She was raised in First United Methodist Church and then married the Presbyterian preacher’s son. She was fond of saying she went into her wedding a Methodist and came out of the church a Presbyterian.

I don’t do whine. If you choose to whine around me, I may ask if you want a little cheese to go with that. If you are disenchanted with the way the world is treating you, grab yourself by the bootstraps, pick yourself up and take yourself to a place that suits you better. Be it a job, the place you live, the people you socialize with, the house you live in — don’t whine about it. You and only you can change it. Most of us could care less whether or not you are discontent.

Prescription drug Take Back Day is Saturday

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day will take place Saturday, Oct. 24. Several collection sites around the nation will allow residents to safely dispose of prescription drugs between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Locally, the Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff’s office is participating in the DEA prescription drug take back initiative and will be available to take old prescription medications at the main office located at 1530 LA 90 West in Jennings. Please do not bring liquids or needles to be disposed of, only tablets or capsule medicines.

Unclaimed property available

Readers of Jennings Daily News found extra value in reading the Wednesday, Oct. 21 edition, when the Louisiana Department of Treasury published the names of individuals and businesses for whom the state received Unclaimed Property money in the preceding year.
