Early Voting Continues

Early voting will continue until Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the Registrar of Voters, located at 302 N. Cutting Ave. in Jennings.

In our kitchen, one of my two simple bar stools lost one of its dowels. I should not be surprised because the stools are probably 30 years old and, as I well know, things can decline during three decades of life.

I could have purchased new stools to replace this undependable one and its companion, but today’s bar stools don’t always have padded seats and I rather liked that feature of these two longtime friends.

Plus, today’s bar stools often come with backs and style so they don’t fit in the small space allotted in my kitchen.

Next up in hunt for COVID-19 vaccine: Testing shots in kids

(AP) – The global hunt for a COVID-19 vaccine for kids is only just beginning — a lagging start that has some U.S. pediatricians worried they may not know if any shots work for young children in time for the next school year.

Older adults may be most vulnerable to the coronavirus, but ending the pandemic will require vaccinating children, too. Last week, Pfizer Inc. received permission to test its vaccine in U.S. kids as young as 12, one of only a handful of attempts around the world to start exploring if any experimental shots being pushed for adults also can protect children.

OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma to plead to three criminal charges

WASHINGTON (AP) — Purdue Pharma, the company that makes OxyContin, the powerful prescription painkiller that experts say helped touch off an opioid epidemic, will plead guilty to three federal criminal charges as part of a settlement of more than $8 billion, Justice Department officials announced Wednesday.

The company will plead guilty to three counts, including conspiracy to defraud the United States and violating federal antikickback laws, the officials said. The resolution will be detailed in a bankruptcy court filing in federal court.

State lawmakers pass bill striking at governor’s power

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Republican Louisiana lawmakers voted Tuesday to give themselves more authority to curb Gov. John Bel Edwards’ coronavirus restrictions and emergency powers, under a deal brokered between House and Senate GOP leaders that ended a stalemate on the major issue of the special session.

After days of negotiations behind closed doors, the agreement was included in a bill by Covington Republican Rep. Mark Wright. The final language won Senate support Tuesday in a 23-13 vote, followed by House backing in a 54-30 vote.

ARFLA event postponed due to hurricane

A fundraiser scheduled for Saturday has been postponed due to the hurricane.

“Way too many people have damage to their homes and we just didn’t want to ask people for money right now,” said organizer Lisa Trahan.

The fundraiser for the furry friends of Jennings was originally scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24 at Founder’s Park in Jennings.

“We are still going to do it,” Trahan said. “We are just going to hold off for a while. Some people still don’t even have electricity in the rural areas.”
