Lady Dogs plow through Southside 55-31

LAKE ARTHUR – The Jennings Lady Bulldogs opened up the Lake Arthur Tournament with a 55-31 win over the 5A Southside Sharks on Wednesday afternoon at “Nookie” Moore Gymnasium. The Lady Dogs placed three starters in double figures, and had control of the contest from the beginning. With the win, Jennings improves their impressive record out to 11-3 overall, and took on Barbe Thursday night.

Sketoe, Hornsby lead LA to 58-36 win over Ville Platte

LAKE ARTHUR – The Lake Arthur Lady Tigers rallied in the second half of their opening contest in their tournament to defeat the Ville Platte High Lady Bulldogs by a final of 58-36 here at “Nookie” Moore Gymnasium on Monday. Lake Arthur trailed 28-27 going into the half, but outscored their guests 31-8 in the second half to ultimately claim the 22-point win. Lake Arthur rode the scoring of Vivian Sketoe and Kali Hornsby, as both dropped in 21 points apiece in the victory. Sketoe nailed a whopping seven 3-pointers for all 21 of her points.

School vaccine mandate struck down

A state legislative committee voted 13-2 this week against a measure being proposed by the governor and the state health department that would add the COVID-19 vaccine to the list of required immunizations need ed in order to attend Louisiana schools.

JPA continues tradition of Shop-with-a-Cop

For over 20 years, Jennings Police Association (JPA) has been reaching out into the community to help those in need for Christmas.

Shop-with-a-Cop, a tradition enjoyed by the officers, allows them to share their compassion and commitment to the community.

“It’s a chance for officers to interact with the public in a way they don’t usually get to,” said Jennings Police Department (JPD) Chief Danny Semmes. “Dealing with law enforcement has the potential to be a traumatizing experience. We enjoy Shop-with-a-Cop just as much as the kids do!”

HHS club to host holiday market fundraiser

HATHAWAY — Hathaway High School (HHS) Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is hosting a fundraiser which will provide a day of shopping for local residents while helping students with state conference fees.

The FCCLA Holiday Market is the biggest fundraiser the club has each year, according to sponsor Aprill Moore.

Moore said the market is held each year to help defray costs for students wanting to attend the club’s state conference. Students are responsible for paying for the bus, hotel rooms and conference fees.

Safety precautions needed when using heat sources

As cooler weather appears in the parish, using fuel-burning heat sources increase the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. While these devices provide comfort from the cold, thorough precautions are needed to protect against this silent killer.

CO is a colorless and odorless gas whose symptoms mimic those of the flu. Each year, CO poisoning is the cause of 450 deaths due to accidental exposure, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease and Control (CDC).
