JDSO seeks burglary suspect

Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Office (JDSO) deputies are trying to determine the identity of a suspect who was caught on camera in a burglary of a local church.

According to JDSO Chief Deputy Chris Ivey, an unidentified suspect was seen on camera Tuesday, Nov. 30 entering a back door at Bethel Church on La. 102.

“The unidentified person was seen walking through various parts of the church and entering an office, before walking out with an item that didn’t belong to them,” he said.

Catholic Daughters adopt nursing home residents for holidays

The Catholic Daughters of Our Lady Queen of Peace Court No. 1985 from Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jennings adopted the residents of the Jeff Davis Living Center (JDLC) this year for Christmas to brighten their holiday season.

Each of JDLC’s 85 residents will receive a gift bag containing lotion, toothpaste, toothbrush, Chapstick, socks, tissues, word finds, rosary, prayer card, hairbrushes, combs, ponytail holders and a Christmas Card from the Catholic Daughters members.

IOTA — Two local farmers transformed 10-acres of land into a spectacular Christmas display many years ago and the tradition contin ues.

Gerard Frey Farms and D&G Frey Crawfish owners Gerard and Dana Frey have decorated their farm for the community for 12 years in a row.

Every year, on the second Saturday of December, Santa Claus comes to the farm to visit the children of the area.

The Freys deem this night Santa on the Pond because of where he is seated when he meets the children. This year the event will take place at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11.

United Way seeks volunteer tax preparers

Volunteers are being sought to assist with tax preparation for those in need in the area.

United Way of Southwest Louisiana’s (UWSL) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is seeking volunteers to provide free tax services to thousands of families throughout the five-parish area, which includes Jeff Davis, Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu and Cameron parishes.

Saints’ Hill seizing starting QB role, damaged digit and all

METAIRIE, La. (AP) — After a plastic water bottle slipped from Taysom Hill’s hands and bounced at his feet, the Saints quarterback possessed the good humor to laugh when asked if the injured middle finger on his throwing had had anything to do with it.

The versatile Hill has endured disappointments and injuries this season, but enters this week’s game against the New York Jets with a hopeful outlook.

Brad Davis to remain as LSU offensive line coach

BATON ROUGE – Brad Davis will remain as LSU’s offensive line coach, head coach Brian Kelly announced on Wednesday.

Davis, a Baton Rouge native who is currently serving as LSU’s interim head coach for the Texas Bowl, is in his first season with the Tigers. He joined the LSU staff in June after one season at Arkansas.

Alabama QB Young, LB Anderson named SEC Players of Year

(AP) — Alabama once again collected a Southeastern Conference title and two big leaguewide individual awards.

Quarterback Bryce Young is the SEC’s offensive player of the year and linebacker Will Anderson Jr. is the top defensive player, as voted on by a panel of sports writers and broadcasters covering the league. The voting was released on Wednesday.

Chiefs’ Mathieu making important plays on and off the field

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — There may be no other time in Tyrann Mathieu’s life that he’s felt such an affinity for the place he calls home.

The three-time All-Pro safety arrived in Kansas City three years ago after a year-long stint in Houston, signing a $42 million deal that gave him some sought-after stability.

And with the knowledge that he’d call the city home for a while, Mathieu not only poured himself into helping the Chiefs win a championship but also into helping the community.
