Teams spend $1B on day MLB, union likely head to lockout

NEW YORK (AP) — Before getting locked out, players loaded up Wednesday as big league teams unlocked their coffers for an unprecedented spending spree.

Major league teams committed to over $1 billion in salaries in one day for the first time Wednesday, hours before the league was expected to lock out the players following the 11:59 p.m. expiration of the collective bargaining agreement.

College Football Playoff expansion talks inch forward

DALLAS (AP) — The latest meeting on expanding the College Football Playoff wrapped up without a resolution Wednesday as the people involved agreed to keep talking.

CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock said there remains a strong consensus among the management committee, comprised of the 10 major college football conference commissioners and Notre Dame’s athletic director, to expand the four-team playoff field.

Shot incentive extended through Dec. 31

Louisiana’s Shot For $100 vaccine incentive program is being extended through the end of the year, giving residents another chance to get their shots throughout the holiday season.

Louisiana residents now have until Dec. 31 to get their vaccine at a participating community-based site as listed on ShotFor100.com, according to the Louisiana State Department of Health (LDH).

As of Nov. 29, more than 34,300 debit cards have been distributed through Shot For 100.

DOTD announces emergency lane closure

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) recently announced emergency lane closures on the westbound lane of I-10 at the Jeff Davis and Acadia parish line.

According to DOTD, the closures are for bridge repairs and will take place near mile marker 66 today. The outside or right lane of I-10 will be closed from 7 a.m. on Dec. 1 to 7 a.m. on Dec. 2, weather permitting.

“The roadway will be open to regular traffic with a 15-foot lane restriction on oversized loads passing through the work zone,” said DOTD Public Information Officer Tammy York.

Welsh physician retires after 40 years

WELSH — A well-known and well-loved pillar of the community announced her-recently anticipated retirement. A group of Dr. Young Kang’s closest friends and patients gathered Tuesday to show gratitude and congratulate the very popular retiree.

When Kang poked her head out the front door of the building where she practices in Welsh, she was shocked and pleased to see a group of patients and some of her closest friends waiting to call out, “Surprise!”

Local Catholic organization seeks new members

A local Catholic organization is looking for new members to join them in supporting the vocation of the priesthood.

The East Deanery Serra Club was established in 2001 and now boasts 77 members from 11 church parishes throughout Jeff Davis Parish and the surrounding area. Their focus is on praying for seminarians who are studying to become priests in the Catholic Church.

Club member Bernadine Daboval said the organization currently has eight seminarians they are supporting.
