LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Two weeks after the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century swept through the Maui community of Lahaina, authorities say more than 800 people remain unaccounted for — a staggering number that presents huge challenges for officials who are trying to determine how many of those perished and how many may have made it to safety but haven't checked in.

Susette Mouton has announced her candidacy for the District 2 seat on the Jeff Davis Parish Police Jury (JDPJ), which will appear on the Oct. 14 ballot. A life-long resident of Jeff Davis Parish, Mouton has worked in public service and law enforcement throughout the parish for the last 40 years.

Elton residents asked to conserve water

ELTON — Due to the drought, East Allen Parish Water District, the water supplier to Elton, is asking all residents who receive their water through its system to conserve. The water supply is running low and if the reserve gets too low, there will be no fire protection for the area, Elton Mayor Kesia Lemoine said. Additionally, if a mechanical failure occurs there will be no water supplies for homes or fire protection.
