Genealogy group meeting set

A group of parish residents who discovered a passion for learning more about family history is holding its monthly meeting and inviting the public to attend. The Genealogical Society of Jennings will be meeting from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Jeff Davis Arts and Technology Center, located at 137 North Main St. in Jennings.

Tigers chop down Basile, 34-12

BASILE — The Lake Arthur Tigers picked up their first win of the season when they travelled over to Basile and thrashed the Bearcats by a final of 34-12. The Tigers combined a stifling defense with a powerful offense to earn the victory on the sloppy field at Bearcat Stadium, rolling up 286 yards of total offense. Quarterback Cam Bonin tossed the pigskin for 131 yards, while fullback Carson Myers went over the century mark with 101 yards on 21 carries.

Late surge propels Blue Jays past Elton

ELTON — The Elton Indians opened their 2024 football season when they hosted former district rival St. Edmund (St. Eds) Friday night. Elton led 15-7 early in the second quarter, but the Blue Jays would score 35 straight points to take a 42-15 win on a muddy field.

Yellow Jackets sting Greyhounds, 40-16

WELSH — The Kinder Yellow Jackets parlayed a tenacious defense and an opportunistic offense into a winning effort as they flew by the Welsh Greyhounds by a 40-16 score in the first week of the regular season. The visitors had a balanced offensive attack, as they ran for 218 yards and passed for another 170 stripes.

Rice video contest offers JDP seniors scholarship opportunity

September is National Rice Month and USA Rice is holding their annual Reel Rice contest, where graduating seniors from Jeff Davis Parish can create and submit a video all about rice with an opportunity to win $5,000 in scholarship funding. The contest will award three scholarships. The deadline to submit videos is Oct. 15.

LA to get new boardwalk lights, pickleball court

Lake Arthur — The lakefront area is receiving a little upgrade with new decorative lights along the boardwalk and two new pickleball courts, joining a national craze over the emerging family-friendly sport.
