ER NURSE SAYS IT WAS 'SECOND NATURE' TO RESCUE MAN TRAPPED IN HURRICANE FLOODWATERS

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A man whose pickup truck got trapped in rushing floodwaters unleashed by rains from Hurricane Francine was saved by a Good Samaritan who also happened to be an emergency room nurse. Miles Crawford waded through waist-high water in New Orleans on Wednesday night to smash through the truck's back window and pull the driver out. Ten minutes later, the vehicle was fully submerged. The 39-year-old Crawford cut his hand in the process but said he had no choice but to do what had to be done. The ER nurse at University Medical Center said the rescue was “just second nature, I guess.”

FEDS RARELY PUNISH HOSPITALS FOR TURNING AWAY PREGNANT PATIENTS

(AP) — An Associated Press analysis has found that hospitals are rarely fined for violating a federal law that is supposed to guarantee that patients with medical emergencies get the treatment they need. Only a dozen hospitals have been penalized over the last two years for violations of that law. That's despite more than 100 hospitals turning away pregnant patients in that time, leaving some to miscarry in restrooms, deliver babies in cars or develop risky infections. Some hospitals have repeatedly violated the law without consequence.

Suicide prevention walk planned for Saturday

LAKE CHARLES — Area residents who have been affected by suicide are invited to participate in a walk to raise awareness of suicide prevention.

Trash schedule changes

The City of Jennings resumed trash pickup on Thursday but is running one day behind. The regular Thursday route will run today, and Friday’s route will be completed on Saturday.
