Iota boys grab runner-up finish at powerlifting state meet

ALEXANDRIA - The Iota Bulldogs were expecting to bring home a trophy from Saturday’s Division III boys state powerlifting championships at Rapides Parish Coliseum. And they did. It just wasn’t the hardware they were hoping for. The Bulldogs had one lifter bomb out and it cost them as they fell two points shy of a state title, finishing second (35 points) to champion Abbeville (37 points). “It is nice to come home with a trophy, but you could tell that the kids knew we didn’t do what we were supposed to do,” said IHS coach Ray Aucoin.

Altuve, Astros finalize $163.5M, 7-year contract

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — AL MVP Jose Altuve and the World Series champion Houston Astros have finalized a $163.5 million, seven-year contract that guarantees an additional $151 million over five seasons.

The 27--year-old second baseman had been among baseball’s best bargains. He agreed in 2013 to a deal that originally guaranteed $12.5 million from 2014-17 and included club options for 2018 at $6 million and 2019 at $6.5 million.

Shelton eager to contribute to New England Patriots’ success

Danny Shelton didn’t need very long to start toeing the New England Patriots’ company line.

Less than a week after New England acquired Shelton in a trade with the Cleveland Browns, the defensive lineman is already singing coach Bill Belichick’s praises and taking notice of the team’s culture of success.

“Part of the formula to winning is doing your job, and I see that everywhere at the facility with everyone just staying focused and having that same goal leading towards success, and that’s what I want to be a part of,” Shelton said on a conference call Monday.

FAIRVIEW – The Jennings Bulldogs continued their hot-streak on Thursday by knocking off the Fairview Panthers, 7-1, in a contest that saw the locals pretty much dominate from start to finish.

The victory, Jennings’ sixth straight, sent the Bulldogs to 7-4 on the season heading into Tuesday’s District 4-3A opener at Iowa.

Kamran Richard picked up the victory on the mound for the Dogs after allowing just one run on two hits and two walks. He struck out three in four innings.

Girls 6-B All-District Correction

Lacassine High School’s Haylie Hoffpauir and Macey Guidry were mistakenly left off of the District 6-B Honorable Mention Girls’ Basketball Team in Thursday’s edition of Jennings Daily News (JDN). The JDN Sports staff apologizes for the mistake and congratulates both Hoffpauir and Guidry for their accomplishments.

Cardinals rally for 13-10 win over Tarpons

BELL CITY – The Lacassine Cardinals jumped out to an early lead, fought off a late South Cameron (SC) rally and scored 5 runs in the sixth and seventh innings to claim a hard-fought 13-10 win over the Tarpons Thursday night at the Bell City High School Baseball Tournament. After suffering a pair of 1-run heartbreakers to Hackberry (6-5) and Hamilton Christian (12-11) earlier in the week, the Cards found a way to put a game away when given the chance according to coach Kevin Bruchhaus.

Lady Eagles bang out 17 hits in victory over CHEF

BATON ROUGE – Brianna Langley was masterful both in the circle and at the plate Thursday for the Bethel Christian Lady Eagles in their road matchup with the CHEF Lady Patriots.

Langley struck out 14 batters while on the mound and also went 5-for-5 at the dish with a double and four RBI to help lead the Lady Eagles to a 21-4 victory over the Lady Patriots.

The Lady Eagles led 13-4 after five innings before exploding for eight runs in the top of the sixth to end the game by virtue of the mercy-rule.

LAKE ARTHUR – Jamara Levy wowed basketball fans all over the state with her quickness, lightning fast ability to get to the rim and all out hustle in leading the Lake Arthur Lady Tigers to a Class 2-A State Runner-Up finish in 2018. However, the McNeese State commit found out she has one game left to play before her high school basketball career is over. Levy was selected to play in the LHSCA All-Star Game held at Bossier Parish Community College this Saturday at 1 p.m. featuring the best Louisiana high school players from all classifications.
