Tennis Dogs show well against Teurlings

The Jennings High Lady Bulldog Tennis team blasted the Teurlings Rebels this week, while the Bulldogs finished with a 3-3 tie with their counterparts on the courts. Both the Dogs and Lady Dogs had busy weeks, playing 4 matches in 5 days.

“I feel as a whole we are playing a lot more relaxed and confident in a lot of areas,” said Jennings Head Coach Jared Lavergne. “We still have a few more difficult squads to face going forward, but the momentum we are building looks to be in our favor. We had some very important wins in this Teurlings match.”

LSU holds on for 84-76 win over Louisiana-Lafayette in NIT

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Duop Reath shot 10 of 14 from the field and finished with 26 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and two steals to help LSU beat Louisiana-Lafayette 84-76 on Wednesday night in the first round of the NIT.

Brandon Sampson scored 18 points, Skylar Mays added 11 and Tremont Waters had nine points with seven assists for LSU.

Marcus Stroman hit a jumper with 1:39 to play that capped an 11-1 run and pulled ULL, which trailed by as many as 14 points early in the second half, within one. LSU (18-14) hit 9 of 13 free throws from there to seal it.

Iota ladies hammered by Pine Prairie

PINE PRAIRIE - The road to the District 5-3A softball title runs through perennial power Pine Prairie and the Iota Lady Bulldogs found that out first hand Tuesday afternoon.

In a matchup of league unbeatens, it all Pine Prairie in this one.

The Lady Panthers (16-1, 6-0) pounded out 19 hits, including six doubles and two home runs, en route to a 14-4 victory over the Lady Dogs in a game that was halted after the sixth inning due to the mercy-rule.

Iota (10-4, 4-1) had just four hits off Lady Panther hurler Karli Ortego, who gave up four walks and struck out 10.

Lady Pios cruise past LA

CROWLEY - It was a tough day at the office for the Lake Arthur Lady Tigers Tuesday in their District 6-2A matchup with league favorite Notre Dame.

The Lady Pios belted out 17 hits, including three straight home runs in the first inning, and cruised to a 24-4 victory in a game that was halted after the third inning due to the mercy rule.

The Lady Tigers (4-6, 1-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first innings when Deonna Brister, who reached base on a fielder’s choice, scored on a ground out by Miya Breaux.

The lead was short lived.

Bulldogs make it 5 straight with win over Oberlin

OBERLIN – The Jennings Bulldogs ran their winning streak to five straight earlier in the week with an impressive 12-6 victory over Oberlin.

The Bulldogs (6-4) belted out eight hits on the evening, including three for extra bases.

Kolby Britt led the charge with two knocks and two RBI. Payton Mitchell and Kye Cary each had one hit and two RBI. Mitchell’s hit was a double.

Kole Myers tripled and drove in one run, Kamron Richard and Luke Benoit each singled and had one RBI and Nick Zeman rounded out the offense with a single.

Lady Cardinals smash LCCP 21-10

LAKE CHARLES – Trailing 10-8 heading into the top of the fifth inning and seeking its first win since re-establishing softball back at Lacassine High School, the Lady cardinals took things into their own hands by throwing up a 13-run frame to take a 21-10 advantage into the bottom half of the fifth. That would be all the Lady Cardinals would need as they held the Lake Charles College Prep (LCCP) Trailblazers scoreless in the final frame to claim the 10-run rule victory and get into the win column.

LACASSINE - The Lacassine Lady Cardinals dominated the recently announced 6-B All-District Girls’ Basketball squad by placing 3 players on the first team, including senior Kassi Thibodeaux being tabbed as the team’s Most Valuable Player. Lady Cardinal Head Coach Jeremy Hollier was also honored by being named the district’s Coach of the Year. The Lady Cardinals claimed yet another 6-B crown and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class B State Playoffs in 2017-18.

Tigers blast South Cameron

CREOLE – The Lake Arthur Tigers upped their season mark to 6-2 on the young baseball season by blasting the South Cameron Tarpons by a final of 14-0 Monday afternoon in Cameron Parish. Tiger pitchers Addison Landry and Jarron Whitman combined to fire 5 innings of 1-hit ball to silence the Tarpon bats and claim the 10-run rule win. Landry went 2.2 innings to start and didn’t allow a hit and fanned 1 SC hitter, while Whitman came in to shut the door by firing 2.1 innings of 1-hit ball and struck out 1 as well.

Hounds move to 8-3 with 11-4 win over Grand Lake

WELSH - In this dogfight on the diamond between the Welsh Greyhounds and the Grand Lake Hornets, two halves of the game were played very differently for both teams. Each team showing out in one of the halves but only one coming out with the win. The Hounds were able to overcome a shaky start, but prevailed for an 11-4 win at Sportsman’s Park in Welsh.

The Hornets got the ball rolling early, giving themselves a nice 4-0 lead to start the game due to some errors by the Greyhounds and simply by putting some hard hit balls into play.
