Squire R. Shear, old citizen, gone to rest

Mr. Squire Reuben Shear was born in Elbridge, N.Y., December 22, 1833. He was married in Decorah, Iowa, to Miss Jane Elizabeth Miller, Sept. 29, 1865. They moved to New Hampshire, Iowa, in 1870 and came to Jennings in 1887, where they have resided every since. Mr. Shear has always been contented with his home in the far south.

Elton Indians mourn death of chief

The 92-year-old chief of the Coushatta Indian Tribe at Elton has died.

WELSH — A drive to have Welsh named 'Heart of the Beef Cattle Industry of the South' received a boos from the Welsh Chamber of Commerce this week.

‘Phantom’ is arrested and returned here

Lester Martin, famed “Phantom” robber, who made a sensational escape from the Jeff Davis Parish jail last July 25, was captured Friday night at Beaumont and returned here by O.J. Hebert, state patrolman, and Louis de Launday, deputy sheriff, Azenor Buller, sheriff, announced today.

R.B. Ricker of this city, has the distinction of having made the first “Eagle” ever made on the Crowley golf course, when the local golfer made the hole-inone on the No. 3, 135 hole on that course Sunday.
