Local soldier meets cousin first time in Korea

Sick call at a U.S. Far Was Air Force base in Korea turned into a family reunion for M/Sgt. V.C. Hardin, Jennings, and Pfc. Jack E Hardin of Bonham, Texas, first cousins who had never met before.

THE ELECTION

The municipal election last Friday was a “bummet,’ and while it was generally a good natured contest, the spirit of rivalry ran high, and it was pronounced the hottest election since the birth of Jennings. The three-cornered mayoralty contest became much closer than had been anticipated by the average voter. John H. Roberts is mayor.

Narrow Escape

Bert Perry, employed by the A.F. Derouen Hardware Company, had a very narrow escape from serious injury if not death yesterday when an acetylene gas machine in the rear of the store exploded.

JENNINGS FIRE CHIEF RETIRES

Jennings Fire Chief Lisso Lawrence, who has been on sick leave since suffering a heart attack in May 1987, has submitted his resignation to Mayor Jennifer Meyer.

Speakers stress independent school actions

An Evangeline Parish Baptist minister Monday night described how the federal government "ran up against some real freedom-loving 'Cajuns'" who built a $125,000 private school, then he launched an appeal for Jeff Davis Parish residents to do the same.

The result was that $22,000 was pledged by individuals present at the meeting, bringing to $50,000 the amount raised to date for the school.

Deimer case has been appealed

There promises to be considerable controversy over the case of the Town of Jennings vs. Chas. Deimer, which was decided Tuesday against Deimer. The case has been appealed to the district court.

Deimer was charged with selling whiskey, and sentenced to pay fines of $25 and costs or to remain imprisoned in the town jail for a period of thirty days.

FIVE CHARGED IN ROBBERIES BROUGHT BACK

Five alleged ex-convicts who made the mass robbery of 42,000 gallons of gasoline coupons from local bulk stations ten days ago will be returned here for trial, Sheriff Azenor Buller said today.

The sheriff was successful in gaining the extradition of the quintet and both Governor James Davis of Louisiana and Governor Coke Stevenson of Texas have signed the papers. Deputies Elmer Conner and George Speight left today for Houston to return the five men who were arrested there with a large quantity of the gas ration coupons stolen from the local bulk stations.
