Colonel given second Silver Star for Korean valor

Lt. Col. Douglas Lindsey of Jennings, who braved enemy fire to care for American wounded during Communist attacks in Korea, has been awarded an Oak Leaf Cluster to his Silver Star for gallantry in action.

A medical officer for the Eighth Army, he also was wounded in the engagement and received an Oak Leaf Cluster to the Purple Heart.

Colonel Lindsey distinguished himself early in June, when he voluntarily proceeded to a com pany outpost on a newly secured hill. The position was brought under heavy enemy mortar fire and he was wounded.

Goretti is accepted into L.H.S.A.A. Group

Goretti High School of Lake Arthur has been accepted as an official member of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association.

The school is now eligible for district honors, beginning this spring with track competition.

The Knights will actually compete for title honors in two different districts in three sports, announced Coach James McNally.

In football, Goretti is now a member of District 3-B. Other 3-B members are Hackberry, Elton, Merryville, Iowa, South Cameron, Sam Houston of Lake Charles, and Oberlin.

Welsh-Fenton soon connected by new highway

The highway from Welsh to Fenton, a distance of fifteen miles, is nearing completion. This consummates an effort extending over five years. In 1921, the road was graveled to a distance four miles north of Welsh. The Pelican highway for a distance of five miles southwest of Fenton has been finished about as long. But the intervening six miles forced all traffic to Fenton to go by way of Iowa.

NAME CHANGE FOR KATIE B. GETS APPROVAL

The question of the status of two black school principals was resolved Thursday night by the Jeff Davis Parish School Board, which also approved a name change for a previously all-black school in Elton.

One member, who asked not to be quoted, termed the name change an “unfortunate thing” even though the situation involved was understandable.

The change involved Katie B. Thomas, a school in Elton which was all black prior to court-ordered segregation but now will become a junior high school with all high school students, black and white, attending Elton High School.

TRIP ABROAD REPORTED BY MRS. TRAMMEL

Mrs. W.P. Trammel who, with her husband, has been located for some time in Tunis, North Africa, arrived in Jennings Tuesday, February 9, for a 30-day stay with her aunt, Mrs. E.E. White, and other relatives.

Mrs. Trammel reports many wonderful experiences while abroad.

Mr. and Mrs. Trammel returned to America via steamer across the Mediterranean to Marseilles, France, thence a stay of six days in Paris, departing from La Havre, R.F., on the S.S. France for New York City.
