Refrigerator car loaded at Roanoke

The first solid car of cabbage ever to go out from Jennings was loaded at Roanoke Monday and billed through the Jennings office to the St. Louis markets. The Terrebonne Produce Company of Houma was the buyer. The company's manager, Eddie Breaux, spent the day in Jennings Monday and supervised the loading and culling of the cabbage.

Funds pour in for ball for president

With memberships flowing in and expected to exceed over 400 for the infantile paralysis warfare, Sheriff Gus Broussard, chairman of the parish setup for the annual Birthday Ball for the President, was confident that the goal of $600 set for Jeff Davis would be far oversubscribed.

Area Fire Ignites Old Controversy

HATHAWAY - A weekend fire here has touched off another controversy over whether or not the Jennings Fire Department should respond to out of town fire calls.

Owing to the scarcity of help, we are obliged to operate our business with smaller forces as our boys here have been called into military service or engaged in essential war occupations. They are helping with the war.

Beard seeks $11,892 in back oil pay

NEW ORLEANS - Charles Monroe Beard of Jennings, in a federal court suit filed here last Friday, claimed he worked 8,641 hours overtime for the Continental Oil company of Delaware, defendant, in Louisiana fields and asked $11,892.70 compensation from the company under the fair labor standards act of 1938. A similar sum was sought for alleged "liquidation damages." Beard's suit claimed the alleged overtime was accumulated between Sept. 1, 1937, and Oct. 3, 1941, when he said he was "discharged without just cause."

50-bed nursing home is under construction

Bollich Construction Co. of Jennings has been awarded the contract to build a $250,000 nursing home here, it was announced today by William Kiesel, Jr., president of the organization which will administer the home.

Indian racquet game: Interesting contest scheduled for park, week from Saturday

O. Lexdoux, Jr., manager of the Indian Racquet Players, was in Jennings this morning, completing arrangements for the appearance here Oct. 2nd at the local race park.
