Appeal against closing local black schools filed

NEW ORLEANS – An appeal has been field in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans, seeking to reverse a lower court order regarding the closing of two allblack schools in Jennings.

The suit, filed with the court July 19, seeks to allow Jeff Davis High School and James Ward Sr. Elementary School to remain open in Jennings, rather than allow closing the facilities as outlined in the integration plan of the Jeff Davis Parish School Board which was approved by the U.S. District Court in Lake Charles.

SHIP BY TRUCK ORGANIZATION

A concerted movement is underway to establish a "ship by truck" line between Lafayette and Jennings at an early date. Only one impediment to the movement exists – the condition of the Mermentau ferry, and that obstruction may be removed soon as an attempt is being made to have this difficulty remedied.

Black soldiers entertained at school

JEFF DAVIS PARISH NEWS Sept. 18, 1941 

A division of the 93rd Engineer's Battalion stationed at Fenton was entertained at the black training school Thursday night.

The men were accompanied by their captain, sergeant and lieutenant, all white. Among the group were many black officers.

The white officers said they were treated better in Jennings than any place they had been and the morale of their men has improved since they have been here.

Legacy is a strong word, but speaking to former employees of the 7-Up Bottling Company, there is an impression left that these men and women were affected in a positive way far beyond the simple expectations of a job.

On the other hand, talking to the descendants of Albert Morgan who ran the company their ancestor started, one realizes that for whatever good was passed on through their work ethic, the Morgans feel they were just doing their job.

Mermentau Lions urge restocking of Mermentau River

At a ladies night meeting this week, the Mermentau Lions Club drafted a resolution urging the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to take action as soon as possible toward restocking the Mermentau River with game fish.

The club noted that there was a heavy fish kill during and after Hurricane Audrey on June 27th, and that game fishing was severely curtailed in the Mermentau River.

Bass, perch and bream are asked for principality.

All first grades must enter now

JENNINGS DAILY TIMES-RECORD Sept. 18, 1917

Attention is called to the enrollment of children in the first grade. No child is to be admitted to the first grade for the first term after the end of the second week. The second term will begin about the middle of January and a child may enter the first grade at that time. It may also be well to announce that all children subject to the compulsory attendance law must be enrolled by the end of the week.

Team to play for state championship

The Jennings basketball team is to play for the state championship this year.

There are sixteen districts in the state of Louisiana, of which Jennings is in the fourteenth. The champions of each district will go to Baton Rouge to play the championship games.

The game that was scheduled with Gerstner Field for last Friday was called off on account of the dampening of the weather and the wet ground. The Jennings team lost quite a lot of money on the deal on account of having to pay the expenses of the visiting team.
