Shooting suspect in custody

A juvenile suspect is currently in custody for a shooting that took place during an altercation in April.

Jennings Police Department (JPD) Chief Danny Semmes said Wednesday that the 15-year-old male suspect turned himself in to the Iowa Police Department.

The juvenile is currently being held at a juvenile facility in Calcasieu Parish and is facing charges of attempted second-degree murder.

Officers received a 911 call of a male subject who had been shot multiple times in the abdomen on Friday, April 26.

Super Summer event relocated

Due to anticipated rainfall, the Kiwanis Club of Jennings’ Super Summer Signup will be held inside the James Ward Elementary Gymnasium on Shankland Avenue. The free event is open to the public from 10 a.m. until noon and will connect parents with various summer activities available to children.

WELSH - Green thumbs, bakers and craftsmen will start packing the lawn outside the former city hall here May 28.

The Welsh Farmers Market will be held each Tuesday during growing season between 4-6 p.m. outside the old city hall building on Elm Street. Longtime organizer Charles Drake said the market is hosted during the week to encourage vendors and buyers to attend that event as well as the Main Street Farmers Market in Jennings on Saturday mornings. The Jennings market is held at Founder’s Park on Main Street from 7-10 a.m.

Program offers meal assistance to caregivers

For those who provide daycare services in their homes, assistance may be available to help cover the costs for meals being fed to the children. Feed the Children is a non-profit organization focused on alleviating childhood hunger. “We have a reimbursement program that helps cover the costs of nutritious meals for up to six children,” said administrative assistant Theresa Seaux. “A lot of our participants are people who keep their grandchildren, or nieces and nephews.” The program does not provide food but instead reimburses providers for meals that are prepared in the home, Seaux said.

Hurricane season – do you feel lucky?

Here on the Gulf Coast, we certainly perk up when this time of year rolls around. For years, a good story in south Louisiana went like this:

Trump’s war on legal immigrants

President Trump and his allies often say they only oppose undocumented immigrants, not legal ones. During a 2016 campaign stop in Illinois, Trump even applauded a supporter wearing a T-shirt that read, “Legal Immigrant For Trump.”

The candidate patted the man on the back and said, “We want people to come in. But they’ve got to come in, like you, legally, my man.”
