LAHS hosts cheer awards banquet

The end of the year athletic awards banquet at Lake Arthur High School have begun at hinting that the end of the school year is fast approaching. Recently, the LAHS Varisty Cheerleaders were honored at their end of the year ceremony. The banquet was lead by the cheer sponsor and LAHS teacher, Kayla Deshotel, and also cheer coach Tiffany Harrington.

The Council on Aging provides many services to Jeff Davis Parish residents aged 60 and over. The congregate meal program provides a hot meal served at 10:30 a.m. Monday-Friday.

Trump plans to talk energy jobs in May 14 trip to Louisiana

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — President Donald Trump plans to visit Louisiana next week to highlight job growth related to energy.

The White House said Monday that Trump is scheduled to travel May 14 to Hackberry, an unincorporated Louisiana community on the Gulf Coast between New Orleans and Houston. The president plans to tour a shipping facility that uses trains to bring in liquefied natural gas for export overseas.

The White House says Trump will discuss how energy infrastructure projects such as Sempra’s Cameron LNG Export Facility in Louisiana are creating American jobs.

Bid to ban death penalty rejected

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Louisiana’s senators overwhelmingly Monday rejected a proposal to end the state’s use of capital punishment.

Republican Sen. Dan Claitor, of Baton Rouge, proposed to abolish the death penalty for any offenses committed starting in 2021 — if voters agreed in the November 2020 presidential election.

Only 13 senators backed the idea, while 25 opposed it. The legislation needed support from 26 senators to pass. House lawmakers have spurned similar proposals for the last two years.

Chinese team heads to US to salvage trade talks

BEIJING (AP) — Efforts to end a U.S.-China trade war are in shambles after the United States accused China of reneging on its commitments and prepared to raise import taxes on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods.

A Chinese delegation is headed to Washington to salvage talks aimed at resolving a dispute over China’s aggressive push to challenge American technological dominance. Negotiations are set to resume Thursday.

Report: Iran prepares to withdraw from parts of nuclear deal

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran on Wednesday will announce it is partially withdrawing from the nuclear deal it struck with world powers, its state-run news agency reported, a year to the day that President Donald Trump pulled America from the accord.

Ga. governor signs abortion ban after fetal heartbeat

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on Tuesday signed into law one of the nation’s most restrictive abortion laws, a measure that bans the procedure once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which can be as early as six weeks, before many women know they are pregnant.

Kemp, a Republican, said he approved the bill “to ensure that all Georgians have the opportunity to live, grow, learn and prosper in our great state.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — James Bond’s shiny silver sports car — with its JB007 rotating license plate — is the first thing visitors see when they step into the new and improved International Spy Museum that opens Sunday in Washington. After that, it’s as if the history of Hollywood’s famous private eye vanishes in invisible ink, while the stories of real-life spies and modern-day espionage take center stage.
