It’s with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Betty Adams Chapman announces her passing from this life on May 6, 2019, at the age of 80.

Funeral services will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Jennings on Friday, May 10, 2019, at 11 a.m., with Jack Harris officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at the funeral home today, Thursday, May 9, from 4-8 p.m. Visitation will resume on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of her service at 11 a.m.

Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery in Iowa.

Wilbert Joseph Touchet

Wilbert Joseph Touchet was born on June 17, 1942, to the late Linus Touchet and Jane Vincent Touchet LaCombe of Kaplan. He departed this life on May 1, 2019.

Final arrangements are entrusted to Louisiana Funeral Services and Crematory of Broussard.

Wilbert was affectionately known as Willie. He served 20 years in the US Navy and 37 years with Auto Comm. Willie was an amazing man - hard working, dedicated to his family, wife, stepchildren, daughter, grand and greatgrandchildren.

On Saturday, May 11, the Jennings Kiwanis Club will sponsor an event dedicated to making the public aware of youth-related activities that will be offered throughout the summer months.

From 10 a.m. until noon, vendors will have booths set up at both the Carnegie Library and the Jennings Branch of Jeff Davis Parish Libraries that will allow parents to sign their children up for a host of events that will be offered around the community.

An updated list of attendees has been provided by event organizer Will Hetzel.

Trump invokes privilege over full Mueller report

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House invoked executive privilege Wednesday, claiming the right to block lawmakers from the full report from special counsel Robert Mueller on his Trump-Russia probe and escalating the battle between President Donald Trump and Congress.

The administration’s decision was announced just as the House Judiciary Committee was gaveling in to consider holding Attorney General William Barr in contempt of Congress over failure to release the full report.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran threatened Wednesday to enrich its uranium stockpile closer to weapons-grade levels in 60 days if world powers fail to negotiate new terms for its 2015 nuclear deal, raising regional tensions as a U.S. aircraft carrier and bombers headed to the Middle East to confront Tehran.

Experimental surgery gains support as opioid deaths rise

SHANGHAI (AP) — Patient Number One is a thin man, with a scabby face and bouncy knees. His head, shaved in preparation for surgery, is wrapped in a clean, white cloth.

Years of drug use cost him his wife, his money and his self-respect, before landing him in this drab yellow room at a Shanghai hospital, facing the surgeon who in 72 hours will drill two small holes in his skull and feed electrodes deep into his brain.

The hope is that technology will extinguish his addiction, quite literally, with the flip of a switch.

Hello, Archie! Meghan and Harry name son Archie Harrison

LONDON (AP) — Tired but beaming, Meghan and Prince Harry showed the public their baby son’s face for the first time on Wednesday, and also revealed his name: Archie.

The royal couple said their son, seventh in line to the British throne, is named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

Mountbatten-Windsor is a surname used by some members of the royal family.

The couple did not choose an aristocratic title for the baby, who is not a prince but could have been given a title with “Lord” before his first name.

OLI dominates CCAA track and field meet

LAKE CHARLES – The OLI Track and Field Teams concluded their regular season last week by competing at the Calcasieu Catholic Athletic Association Championships held at Barbe High School. All four teams had magnificent showings, and both the seventh and eighth grade girls and boys teams finished in top three in their divisions.

Harden helps Rockets tie up series with Warriors

HOUSTON (AP) — James Harden scored 38 points and the Houston Rockets held on for a 112-108 win over the Golden State Warriors on Monday night to even their Western Conference semifinals series at 2-2.

The Rockets were up by nine before the Golden State scored the next seven points, capped by a 3 from Stephen Curry, to get within 110-108 with 19 seconds left. Harden made one of two free throws with 11.5 seconds left. Kevin Durant missed a 3 after that. But the Warriors got the rebound and Curry also missed a 3-point attempt before Golden State was forced to foul Chris Paul.
