Nuggets rout Portland 124-98

DENVER (AP) — Nikola Jokic scored 25 points and tied a team playoff high with 19 rebounds, and Paul Millsap injected some experience into a series dominated by youth, sparking the Nuggets’ 124-98 blowout of the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday night that gave Denver a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series.

The Nuggets can secure their first trip to the Western Conference Finals in a decade with a win in Game 6 on Thursday night in Portland.

Owens resigns as alderman

WELSH - Alderman Bob Owens announced Tuesday that he is resigning effective May 31.

In a statement read at a meeting of the board of aldermen and Mayor Carolyn Louviere, he said he had made Louviere and the Secretary of State’s office aware of his resignation.

Owens said he and his wife will be relocating to Florida to be near his father. The alderman’s mother died last year.

“It is with a heavy heart that I do this,” Owens said. “I’ve enjoyed the time I’ve spent serving the Town of Welsh. I’ve had many rewarding experiences here.”

Police: Robbery suspects may have also targeted Rayne store

Police are currently asking the public to be on the lookout for two suspects that were caught on surveillance cameras stealing thousands of dollars in cigarettes from a local convenience store in Jennings, as well as another store in Rayne.

Early Monday morning, Jennings Police Department Chief Danny Semmes said, two suspects stole $4,500 in cigarettes from the Shop Rite convenience store in Jennings.

TREE TAKES DOWN POWER LINES

Rough weather Wednesday morning caused a large tree at the corner of Fourth and North Sherman streets in Jennings to uproot. When the tree fell, it pulled surrounding power lines with it. No injuries were reported and nearby homes were not damaged.

The Zigler Art Museum rotates a variety of exhibits throughout the year which promote local artists from the community and surrounding areas.

From Wednesday, May 15, until Saturday, June 15, the museum will feature the Artwork of Ally Hill exhibit.

“In keeping with our mission to support local artists, we are happy to feature this young lady whose ties to Jennings are so strong,” said Museum Director Celia Jo Black. “A wine and cheese reception will take place from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, offering a sneak peak at the latest exhibit.”

Teachers’ hard work deserves recognition

Being an educator is not for the faint of heart. In fact, it takes dedicated, caring hearts to be in the classroom every day.

Teachers are one of the foundations in society. Without those who have educated us in reading, writing, science and math, we could go on to become journalists, doctors, lawyers, police officers, accountants or oilfield workers.

Some say teachers have an easy job, an 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. schedule on weekdays only, with plenty of holiday breaks and a long summer. The only people who say this are those who have no clue of what an educators’ work entails.

THE WAY I SEE IT

It’s a love/hate relationship. It seems that more often than not, I am referred to as “Mr. Don” or “Mr. West.” It is a sign that those who are addressing me have been reared in good homes, learned proper manners and respect.

On the other hand, more often than I care to realize, I am addressed as “bud,” “dude” or “buddy” when being served in a restaurant or other place of business. Customer service people are not being trained properly and they need to be as the upbringing is not always in place in today’s homes.

At his contentious hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Attorney General William Barr dropped a big hint about his investigation into the conduct of the Trump-Russia investigation.

“Many people seem to assume that the only intelligence collection that occurred was a single confidential informant and a FISA warrant,” Barr said. “I would like to find out whether that is, in fact, true. It strikes me as a fairly anemic effort if that was the counterintelligence effort designed to stop the threat as it is being represented.”
