ABOB to hold auditions

A Block Off Broadway Community Theater (ABOB) is gearing up for its upcoming production of “Daddy’s Dyin’ Who’s Got the Will?”

Those interested in trying out for a part will have two opportunities to audition.

“We will hold the first audition at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 30,” said Director Joey Frazier-Cole. “We will meet again at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 1.”

Auditions will be held at the historic Strand Theater, located at 432 N. Main St.

Frazier-Cole said potential cast members will be reading from the script so preparation will not be necessary.

A GMC Envoy and a Ford F150 pick up truck were involved in a collision on Elton Drive in front of Sonic at lunchtime on Friday. Although some injuries were reported, first responders said no one was seriously hurt.

 

Britney Spears’ ex-manager hit with 5-year restraining order

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge on Thursday issued a five-year restraining order forbidding Britney Spears’ former manager from contacting the singer or her family or making disparaging statements about them online.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny reached the decision after hearing testimony from the ex-manager, 44-year-old Sam Lutfi, and from Spears’ father, James Spears, who has controlled his daughter’s money and affairs via a court-ordered conservatorship for 11 years.

Suburban Denver debates tearing down Columbine school

DENVER (AP) — Two decades after the name “Columbine” became synonymous with a school shooting, the suburban Denver community surrounding the school is debating whether it’s time to tear down a building that also became a beacon for people obsessed with the killings.

Baby cut from slain Chicago woman’s womb dies

CHICAGO (AP) — An infant boy who was cut from a Chicago woman’s womb with a butcher knife died Friday at a hospital where he had been in grave condition since the April attack that killed his mother, family spokeswomen said.

Yovanny Jadiel Lopez died at Christ Medical Center in suburban Oak Lawn from a severe brain injury, according to a statement posted on Facebook by family spokeswoman Julie Contreras, who expressed “great sadness” in announcing the baby’s death. Family spokeswoman Cecilia Garcia confirmed the statement.

Curt R. Doucet, 56, of Jennings, was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Economist sees favorable rice price outlook

LAKE ARTHUR - An LSU AgCenter economist had good news for rice farmers at the Vermilion Parish rice field day on June 11.

“Optimism is high that with recaptured market share in core markets, the outlook for rice is positive from a price standpoint,” saidMichael Deliberto.

He told farmers American rice has become more competitive, which could allow the U.S. to regain market share in Latin America.

NOAA: 260 DOLPHINS DEAD ON GULF COAST, TRIPLE USUAL NUMBER

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Authorities say more than 260 dolphins have stranded across the U.S. Gulf Coast since Feb. 1, triple the usual number. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists say it’s too early to know the cause but they’re investigating whether salinity changes from high rivers and a Louisiana spillway opening contributed to the deaths. NOAA says on its website that a number of the dolphins stranded from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle had open sores consistent with freshwater exposure, but such sores are “not uncommon” in the spring.
