Idid not expect an elementary school talent show to bring anything new under the sun. No one played piano, a trumpet, or even vocals that did not sing over of the actual song. It was mostly dancing that reminded me of the halftime shows a Southern University. One lttle girl dressed as an African princess performed what could have been taken as an authentic tribal dance. It was an impressive performance. And then ... there was ... “Old Town Road.”!

LSU season ends in 12th-inning Super Regional walk-off

BATON ROUGE - Drew Mendoza’s RBI single in the 12th inning spoiled a brilliant performance by LSU reliever Devin Fontenot, as Florida State advanced to the College World Series, 5-4, on Sunday night.

LSU (40-26) saw its 2019 campaign come to an end despite rallying from three runs down twice and force extra innings. Florida State (41-21) will face either Arkansas or Ole Miss in its opening game of the CWS later this week.

JPD seizes gun, $1,500 in meth

Three suspects are currently in custody after authorities discovered over $1,500 in methamphetamine along with a firearm in two separate incidents Sunday.

In the first incident, Jennings Police Department Chief Danny Semmes said officers arrested Jean Paul Landry, 41, of Jennings, and charged him with possession of a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance.

Landry was arrested at the Jennings laundromat after reports were made that he appeared intoxicated.

The public is invited to come out on Friday afternoons in order to catch a glimpse of what feeding time looks like for the new residents of the Gator Chateau facility at the Louisiana Oil and Gas Park.

Public feedings will take place every Friday at 3:30 p.m. through the month of September.

Residents of the pond include three male alligators including one colloquially named “Big Boy,” who is six years old, as well as Bebette and Penu, who are both 2.5 years old, according to Alligator Docent Balie Treme.

More than 500 dancers, drummers and singers from tribes across the nation joined in the annual Coushatta Powwow in Kinder over the weekend.

LA to hold Juneteenth Celebration, Community Fun Day

LAKE ARTHUR - The community is invited to attend a celebration in honor of Juneteenth on Saturday, June 22.

Organizer Caroline Charles said the event will take place from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Park in Lake Arthur. The park is located at the corner of Sixth Street and G.C. Chaney Avenue.

Juneteenth commemorates the ending of slavery on June 19, 1865, in the United States and has been celebrated since the end of the Civil War.

Charles said the event is free and everyone is invited to take part in the family fun.

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the family of Dennis Michael Egelston, Sr., of Jennings announces his passing from this life on June 9, 2019, at the age of 72.

Funeral services will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home today, Tuesday, June 11, 2019, at 7 p.m., with Deacon Mike Tramel officiating and American Legion Post 19 honoring him with full military rites.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at the funeral home today, Tuesday, from 3 p.m. until the time of his service.

Average US price of gas drops 9 cents per gallon to $2.84

CAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — The average U.S. price of regular-grade gasoline dropped 9 cents per gallon (3.8 liters) over the past three weeks, to $2.84. Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg of the Lundberg Survey says Sunday that lower crude oil prices contributed to the drop at the pump. The price is 17 cents lower than what it was a year ago. The average price of diesel fell by 4 cents since May 17, to $3.12.

Public invited to free pool party

As a way of celebrating all the hard work during this past school year, a pool party has been planned and the community is invited to attend.

“After doing an awesome job with school, we wanted to offer the kids a chance to celebrate, relax and have a good time,” said organizer Towana King. “With all the bad things going on in this world, the kids are innocent and deserve a chance to enjoy themselves in a secure environment.”

The party will take place at the Jennings War Memorial Pool beginning at 4 p.m., with swimming from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, June 29.

Stocks rise after US deal with Mexico

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks marched broadly higher in midday trading Monday after the U.S. and Mexico averted a trade war and potentially damaging tariffs, while several companies inked billion-dollar deals.

Monday’s gains follow the strongest week for stocks since November. U.S. President Donald Trump suspended plans to impose tariffs on Mexican goods after the nations managed to strike a deal on immigration. The spat threatened to add more costs for American companies and consumers and expand a global trade war that already includes China.
