Boss Moves provides positive role models for youth

A group of young adults has banned together to make sure younger generations take the positive steps needed to have a bright future.

“Boss Moves was originally designed to help mentor kids,” said President Tyree Madden. “We keep them motivated to stay on the right track in school with their grades.”

Madden said their group helps teach local youth to build character.

“We have meetings and gatherings to talk about school and respecting themselves and others,” he said. “We discuss careers and jobs. As a group, we work together to come up with ideas for future events.”

LDEQ seeks public comments for landfill permit renewal

WELSH - Public comments are being sought by the state for a solid waste permit renewal for the Jeff Davis Parish Sanitary Landfill in Welsh.

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) and Office of Environmental Services have determined that the Solid Waste Permit Renewal application is technically complete and acceptable for public review.

The facility is located at 16157 Landfill Road in Welsh.

Teacher pleads guilty

A former Jennings High School educator pled guilty Sept. 9 to carnal knowledge of a juvenile and indecent behavior with juveniles.

Rachel Marie Gillespie, 28, of Jennings, was arrested in August 2017 after she was accused of having a sexual relationship with a student. Jeff Davis Parish School Board administrators had contacted the sheriff’s department upon learning of the allegations.

Chris Ivey, chief deputy of Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Office, said when announcing the arrest that information gathered during investigation led to detectives requesting an arrest warrant.

Jennings man charged with striking juvenile

A Jennings man is currently in custody after officers discovered he had struck and attempted to strangle a juvenile.

On the evening of Monday, Sept. 16, Jennings Police Department Chief Danny Semmes said his department received a call in reference to a runaway juvenile.

“The juvenile did return home and during an investigation officers learned that the father, Lance Lozeau, 42, of Jennings had struck the youngest juvenile in the face prior to the juvenile running away,” he said.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Eli Manning’s long and distinguished reign as the New York Giants’ starting quarterback is seemingly over. Let the Daniel Jones era begin.

Coach Pat Shurmur announced Tuesday that the No. 6 overall pick in the NFL draft is replacing the two-time Super Bowl MVP as the Giants’ quarterback, beginning Sunday at Tampa Bay.

The move comes less than 24 hours after Shurmur refused to say Manning would remain the starter following two straight losses, the sixth time in seven years New York has gotten off to a 0-2 start.

Beckham puts on show in MetLife return, Browns top Jets 23-3

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Odell Beckham Jr. felt right at home again — in the end zone and on the highlight reels.

With an 89-yard touchdown catch and a spectacular one-handed grab in his return to MetLife Stadium, the Browns wide receiver helped lift Cleveland past the short-handed and banged-up New York Jets 23-3 on Monday night.

“We got the ball in (No.) 13’s hands,” Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry said, “and let him go.”

Welsh to face Yellow Jackets at home

WELSH - The road does not get any easier this week for the Welsh Greyhounds. After suffering a 34-0 loss to Iota last week, the Hounds will once again play up in class when they host the Iowa Yellow Jackets Thursday night. Welsh opened the season with a nail-biting win over class 4A Rayne, and then suffered the crushing defeat to Class 4A Iota last week. Iowa will be the first of two District 4-3A teams the Greyhounds will face this year. Next week Welsh will play host to the St. Louis Saints from the same district.

The New York Times faces questions over Kavanaugh story

NEW YORK (AP) — Between an offensive tweet and a significant revision, The New York Times’ handling of a new sexual misconduct allegation against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh attracted almost as much attention as the accusation itself.

The story also gave President Donald Trump and his allies fresh ammunition in his campaign against the media, where the Times was already a favorite target.

LAKE ARTHUR - A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church for Ronald Charles Broussard, 82, of Lake Arthur Thursday, Sept. 19, 2019, at 2 p.m., with Father Jay Alexius officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home in Lake Arthur today, Wednesday, Sept. 18, from 11:30 a.m. until 10 p.m., with a rosary recited at 6 p.m. The family requests that visitation resume Thursday, Sept. 19, from 8 a.m. until the time of his funeral Mass.

Burial will follow in Andrus Cove Cemetery.
