St. Lawrence Catholic Church Bazaar celebrates 81 years

HATHAWAY- Traditions have been carried on for 81 years in this small rural community. Locals here have kept the St. Lawrence Catholic Church Bazaar alive and growing after all those years.

Hathaway native Sylvia Guillotte, 80, recalls enjoying the event at a very young age.

“I can remember being a little girl and the bazaar was held at Dolzie Gary’s home,” she said. “My favorite memory was that of a little blue merry-goround. A small cart was drawn by a horse. After all these years, I can still remember that.”

After bankruptcy filing, Purdue Pharma may not be off hook

(AP) - Purdue Pharma filed for bankruptcy in the first step in a complex, multibillion-dollar plan by the maker of OxyContin to settle thousands of lawsuits brought against it by state and local governments over the nation’s deadly opioid disaster.

The company and members of the Sackler family, which owns it, expressed sympathy but not responsibility.

Council to focus on special education

The Jeff Davis school system is in the process of forming a special education advisory council meant to provide advice and feedback regarding policies, procedures and resources.

The passing of Act 274 after this year’s legislative session requires school superintendents and charter school leaders to form such councils by Jan. 1, 2020. Kirk Credeur, superintendent of Jeff Davis Parish schools, said Special Education Supervisor Linda Fonger is currently considering having a committee made up of four to five individuals.

Murder suspect Richard jailed on drug, prostitution charges

MORSE - The same day Showtime began airing its Jennings 8 documentary “Murder in the Bayou,” a longtime person of interest in the case was arrested on drug and prostitution charges.

Frankie Richard, 64, is currently being held in the Acadia Parish Jail on an $86,000 bond, charged with inciting prostitution, three counts of possession of a Schedule II narcotic, possession of a Schedule IV narcotic and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested by Morse police Friday, Sept. 13.

HHS graduate qualifies for Summer Olympic tryouts

One young man recently gave it his all in hopes of qualifying for a chance to compete in the upcoming Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Hathaway graduate Garrett Lejeune, 19, is enrolled at Schriener University in Kerrville, Texas. Last week, Garrett had the opportunity to compete in hopes of securing a spot as an Olympic shooter.

“Although he did very well, he just didn’t make the cut this time around,” said his father, Nathan Lejeune. “He is competing against a lot of shooters that have been competing for a very long time, and Garrett is quite new compared to some.”

DODGEBALL FUN

The FFA students at Hathaway High School hosted their annual dodgeball fundraiser Sept. 12, where members of the school and community came together for a little fun. Brayden Richard competed while dressed as a hot dog while coach Courtnee Hollins was quick on her feet.

Fair talent show accepting entries

The 26th annual Jeff Davis Parish Fair Talent Show is right around the corner and parish residents are encouraged to sign up and show off their talent.

Age divisions for solo and duet include 5-7 years, 8-10 years, 11-13 years, 14-18 years and 19 and older. Participants performing in a group may also do additional solo or duet performances. Group age divisions are the same, and a large indoor-outdoor carpet will be provided for teams to compete on.
