$1.25M to evaluate spillway effects on dolphins, sea turtles

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi will get $1.25 million to evaluate the effects of freshwater from a Louisiana spillway on dolphins and sea turtles in the Mississippi Sound.

The money from federal oil and gas revenue-sharing will go to Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Gulfport, Gov. Phil Bryant said in a news release Friday.

The study will examine the abundance, health and habitat of dolphins and sea turtles in the area.

NYPD officer shot, killed during struggle with suspect

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City police officer grappling with an armed man died early Sunday in the Bronx after being shot three times, possibly with his own gun.

The 27-year-old suspect also died after five officers fired at him, police officials said. He has not been publicly identified yet.

The NYPD identified the slain officer as 33-year-old Brian Mulkeen.

“We lost a hero this evening,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a news conference outside Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx.

Funeral services for Darrell L. Marceaux, Sr, of Hathaway were held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home in Jennings Monday, Sept. 30, 2019 at 11 a.m., with Father Charles McMillin officiating.

A gathering of family and friends was held at the funeral home Sunday, Sept. 29, 2019, from 2:30-9 p.m. Visitation resumed Monday, Sept. 30, 2019, from 8 a.m. until the time of his service at 11 a.m.

Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.
