THE WAY I SEE IT

The latest fad that seems to gather interest is searching for our ancestors. I’m not really sure what people are looking for. Will it be that euphoric moment when we discover that we are related to John the Baptist or John Quincy Adams? Will we find bragging rights to discover that we have Italian or Russian blood coursing through our veins? Will we have cause to celebrate when we discover that our lineage was among those who came to America on the Mayflower?

Sometimes the best response is no response

Anybody who writes opinion columns needs to grow a thick skin. As a native of New Jersey, AKA “The Insult State,” I come by mine naturally. Personal invective there is an art form. If being called bad names made you cry, you couldn’t drive to the grocery store without your mommy.

So I don’t quite get New York Times columnist Bret Stephens’ wellpublicized hissy fit over a reader likening him to an unpleasant insect. (Although as a frequent recipient of personal abuse and threats from people who find my opinions upsetting, I do understand the impulse.)

Elton officials: New payment system working well

ELTON - Town officials say that being able to take credit card and e-check payments over the phone is making business easier on both the residents and town employees.

The Town of Elton recently implemented a new software system through RevoPay. Previously all water bills, property taxes and tickets were paid by mail or by visiting city hall and the payments could only be in the form of cash or checks.

State ag chief candidates talk climate, tariffs

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Louisiana’s Republican agriculture commissioner defended his performance Monday against two farmers challenging him in the fall election who said the state needs to offer more help for agricultural producers adapting to changing times and climate realities.

Incumbent Mike Strain, a veterinarian in office since 2008, said Louisiana’s agriculture and forestry industries have doubled in value to $12.7 billion during his tenure. He said he’s streamlined the department, paid down debt and saved taxpayers millions.

Parent: Special needs students left out of yearbook

WALKER (AP) — A parent says pictures of about 20 special needs and special education students have been left out of a yearbook for a junior high school in Louisiana.

The Advocate reports Westside Junior High School in Livingston Parish is offering free reprints of its 2018-19 yearbook that will include two classes not in the original.

Elridge ‘Kiss’ LeBlanc

A Mass of Christian burial for Elridge “Kiss” LeBlanc, 93, of Hathaway will be held in St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Hathaway Friday, Sept. 13, 2019, at 11 a.m., with Father Charles McMillin officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home in Jennings Thursday, Sept. 12, 2019, from 4-9 p.m., with a Rosary recited at 6 p.m. by Deacon Mike Tramel. Visitation will resume Friday, Sept. 13, from 9 a.m. until the time of his service at 11 a.m.

Burial will follow in Bertrand Cemetery.

(AP) — Republicans are hoping an eleventh-hour pep talk from President Donald Trump will propel them to a special election victory Tuesday in a GOP-friendly House district in North Carolina, a race that could illuminate their chances of retaking the House majority and Trump’s own reelection prospects in 2020.

Hong Kong soccer fans loudly boo Chinese national anthem

HONG KONG (AP) — Thousands of Hong Kong soccer fans booed loudly and turned their backs when the Chinese national anthem was played before a World Cup qualifier match against Iran on Tuesday, taking the city’s months of protests into the sports realm.

The crowd broke out into “Glory to Hong Kong,” a song reflecting their campaign for more democratic freedoms in the semiautonomous Chinese territory.

After the match started, fans chanted “Fight for freedom” and “Revolution of our Times.” One person carried a blue poster that read, “Hong Kong is not China.”
