Welsh High School graduated its Class of 2020 Wednesday evening. To see a list of awards and scholarship recipients, look for Jennings Daily News’ special Graduation Keepsake that publishes June 21.

 

ONE COMMUNITY MOVING FORWARD

The Boss Moves organization is planning a peaceful march on Saturday, June 13.

With the help of mentors Derrick Perkins and Towona King, the group would like to pay tribute to those who have paid the ultimate price.

“We are making plans for the march to begin at 3:30 p.m. near the Jennings City Hall,” King said. “We will then make our way to Founders Park by 4 p.m. where we will feature several speakers.”

In light of happenings across the nation, Boss Moves felt it was time to rally the community together to keep the peace here in this town.

A thin line between heinous and historical

The Confederate flag and monuments honoring the perceived southern heroes of the Civil War are causing quite a stir once again in the wake of discussions over racism in America.

Many people see Confederate monuments as dark reminders of a time when black Americans were enslaved. The Confederate constitution allowed for the enslavement of black Americans, so for some, celebrating the Confederacy and its legends is the same as celebrating slavery.

The May jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics dumbfounded economists and made Wall Street analysts look foolish. Supposed experts expected that the huge job losses reflected in the April report, 20.5 million, would continue in May to the tune of 7 million Americans sidelined. Instead, the economy added 2.5 million jobs, and the unemployment rate fell to 13.3 percent from 14.7 percent

The ‘defund the police’ dilemma

What seemed like a crazy slogan on the far left — “Defund the Police” — is threatening to become a reality in some cities around the country. On Sunday the president of the Minneapolis City Council announced that a two-thirds majority of the council now supports “ending the Minneapolis Police Department.” Council members said they will be “taking intermediate steps toward ending the MPD through the budget process and other policy and budget decisions over the coming weeks and months.”

Jennings man dies in single-vehicle crash

Wednesday, at approximately 12:15 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single-vehicle, fatal crash on Louisiana Highway 395 near Bucklin Road in Jefferson Davis Parish. The crash claimed the life of 34-year-old Roy Mallett of Jennings.

Edwards stresses precautions, worries about virus spikes
