Talking pictures now available

Many Jenningsites will soon be motoring over to Beaumont to “take in” the talking pictures, the greatest invention yet perfected in the amusement world.

Beaumont is one of the first 500 of the 30,000 picture houses in the United States to get the Vitaphone.

Walter P. Richardson, noted actor of New Orleans, who visited in Beaumont last week, stated that the Texas city was fortunate on being able to have the Vitaphone installed at the Liberty theater since the concern putting in the equipment is literally swamped with orders, refusing to take more until after April 1929.

Dial phone service begins in Elton

The Elton Exchange of Southwestern States Telephone Co. will be converted to the new dial system at 9 p.m. today according to J.M. Nelson, division manager.

The formal ceremony will take place in the newly completed exchange office on Highway 190 next to the old telephone office, with town officials and local civic club members attending.

A town official will throw the switch for the cutover and the president of a local civic organization will place the first long distance call.

Leon Drouet was in Jennings last night

Leon Drouet, the man who is walking from Los Angeles, Calif., to New Orleans, a distance of over two thousand miles, in the interest of New Orleans' progressive union, was in Jennings last evening, stopping long enough to secure the signature of the Times-Record editor before moving on to Mermentau.

Mr. Drouet left Los Angeles on May 22 and will have been on the road three months by August 22. He is advertising the Manufacturer's exhibition which commences in the Crescent City the first of next month and does not wish to reach there until September 1, the opening day.

Philadelphia often makes national news for unfortunate reasons, like bombing its own neighborhoods, rioting in its streets, pelting Santa with snowballs, and threatening the Boy Scouts with eviction from the home it built for itself.

But sometimes, good things actually do happen in and around Philadelphia, despite President Trump’s suggestion to the contrary.

Last week, Catholic Social Services of Philadelphia appeared before the Supreme Court to strike a blow for religious freedom at a time when people of faith are being targeted around the world.

Many people are pushing for high school students in Jeff Davis Parish to return to five days per week of face-to-face instruction. However, I wonder if the push is solely out of concern for children’s education, or if the push is really about athletics and extracurricular activities.

Great American Smokeout this week

The Great American Smokeout (GASO) is held annually on the third Thursday of every November and was created in 1976 by the American Cancer Society with the idea that people don’t have to stop smoking in one day, just start with day one. The event was designed to reflect what we all know about tobacco addiction—that quitting smoking isn’t easy; it takes time and it takes a plan.

Possum breaks in saloon to lick up hard liquor

Possums are getting numerous in Jennings but when they steal into a saloon to lick up spilled whiskey and beer, it's something else.

When Belezare Lopez and Mark Langley were working around Joe's Bar No. 2 Tuesday night, they noticed an animal behind the counter licking up the beer and hard liquor which had been spilled during the day.

They opine they had little trouble in capturing the possum which gave evidence of having drunk too much.

Sixth grade skirts are cut from rules

If you've got a girl attending the sixth grade in Jeff Davis Parish you don't have to be as worried about the length of her skirts as you would had she been born one year earlier.

At Thursday night's meeting of the parish school board, it was decided sixth grade girls, who are still considered as involved in that rapid growing period of life, would be deleted from the regulations laid down earlier by the board.

School officials are enforcing the law regarding skirts to an allowance of the top of the knee for young ladies from the seventh through the 12th grades.

Welsh celebrates centennial

Residents of the Town of Welsh gathered at city hall last night to commemorate the 100th birthday of the town.

Mayor Charles Bull and members of the Board of Aldermen re-enacted the signing of the town charter by placing their names on a copy of the original document. Bull noted that March 15 is the actual date of the founding of Welsh.

Winners in the centennial contests were announced. Mary Sue Lyon won the logo contest, Kelly Ponder received first place in the poster contest and the Welsh Nursing Home contributed the winning slogan, "Welsh: The Choice of the Future."
