Disaster recovery center opens in Jennings

A FEMA disaster recovery center opened at the parish fairgrounds in Jennings Friday to help survivors of hurricanes Laura and Delta.

There, FEMA employees can answer questions about assistance, check the status of applications and accept documents to be scanned into the registration system, said Renae Gaskins, media relations specialist with FEMA.

State launches business startup program for vets

Wednesday, Louisiana leaders launched an innovative program to hone the entrepreneurial skills of veterans who start a business in the state.

Pathway to Assist Veteran Entrepreneurs, or PAVE, is a partnership of the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs, Louisiana Economic Development, the Louisiana National Guard and the Louisiana Small Business Development Center Network.

Early voting kicks off this week

Early voting for the Dec. 5 election kicks off this week at the Registrar of Voters office beginning on Friday, Nov. 20.

Early voting will be held Nov. 20-28 from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. excluding Sunday, Nov. 22, Thursday, Nov. 26 and Friday, Nov. 27. Early voting is advanced one day because of the holidays, according to the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office (SOS).

Carnegie Library hosts virtual storytime

When the COVID-19 virus made in-person gatherings risky, the Jennings Carnegie Library decided to get creative.

Since May of this year, the library has been hosting children’s events virtually, said Barbara Owen, Children’s Director.

“We did the summer reading program virtually,” said Owen. “We had to stop when we had hurricanes, but we started back up in October.”

Elton High School announces 2020-21 Homecoming Court

Elton High School has announced its homecoming court for the 2020- 2021 year.

Senior maids include Laine Deshotel, Nya Francis, Ariel Guidry and Madelyn Laughlin.

Junior maids are Mallory Guillory, Isabella Leblanc, Shaina Miller and Autumn Williams.

Sophomore maids consist of Sydney Bruchhaus, Juliana Carbalan, Mya Harmon and Kennedy Simon.

The freshmen maids include Tayla Ceasar, Laylah Fontenot, Helela Landry and Ryleigh Shuff.

Dairy Club members awarded at State Fair

The Jeff Davis 4-H Dairy Club participated in the State Fair of Louisiana Junior Dairy Show held Oct. 29-31 at the Louisiana State Fairgrounds in Shreveport.

Members participating at the State Fair included Kyle Sonnier, Camille Sonnier, Wyatt Sonnier, Aubrie Istre, Ella Istre, Marie Thibodeaux, Dani Thibodeaux, Averi Thibodeaux and Emalee Thibodeaux.

The Junior Dairy Show included the Livestock Show, Dairy Educational Day, and the Dairy Capers Contest.

Talking pictures now available

Many Jenningsites will soon be motoring over to Beaumont to “take in” the talking pictures, the greatest invention yet perfected in the amusement world.

Beaumont is one of the first 500 of the 30,000 picture houses in the United States to get the Vitaphone.

Walter P. Richardson, noted actor of New Orleans, who visited in Beaumont last week, stated that the Texas city was fortunate on being able to have the Vitaphone installed at the Liberty theater since the concern putting in the equipment is literally swamped with orders, refusing to take more until after April 1929.

Dial phone service begins in Elton

The Elton Exchange of Southwestern States Telephone Co. will be converted to the new dial system at 9 p.m. today according to J.M. Nelson, division manager.

The formal ceremony will take place in the newly completed exchange office on Highway 190 next to the old telephone office, with town officials and local civic club members attending.

A town official will throw the switch for the cutover and the president of a local civic organization will place the first long distance call.

BEE STINGS ZAP MEDIC

Chuck Dugas and Ray Fontenot of Acadian Ambulance in Jennings had to fight off bees Sunday in order to rescue drivers from an automobile crash Sunday.

The two were on their way back from Lafayette when they received the call to go to an accident on La. 370 near Church Point, according to Keith Simon of Acadian Ambulance.

When they arrived at the scene, Dugas attempted to help one victim. The two cars had crashed into some honey bee hives and the bees were swarming over the injured men. Dugas was stung about 30 times before giving up.
