US could admit more than 50K people from airlift

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security says the government expects to admit more than 50,000 people into the country from the Afghanistan airlift.

Alejandro Mayorkas suggested Friday that figure could climb in what he called an unprecedented evacuation. Mayorkas told reporters during a news conference that the U.S. has brought more than 40,000 people into the country from Afghanistan since the fall of Kabul last month.

Wampus Cats top Dogs in opener, 35-14

The Jennings Bulldogs ran into another hot offense to start the 2021 season, as the Leesville Wampus Cats brought home a 35-14 victory in both teams’ season opener. In a game that was halted twice by lightning and rain, the visitors from Vernon Parish didn’t let that hamper their ability to put points on the board.

The Wampus Cats built a 14-0 lead in the first period before Jennings would get on the board, but two more scores in the opening stanza stretched their lead to 28-8 until the third quarter.

Ohtani strikes out 8 on 117 pitches, Angels beat Rangers 3-2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani allowed two runs, struck out eight and threw a stateside career-high 117 pitches in seven innings, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Texas Rangers 3-2 Friday night.

The Japanese two-way star leads the majors with 42 homers and dropped his ERA to 2.97. He went at least seven innings for the fifth time in 20 starts this season. He reached at least 100 pitches for the fourth time in 32 big league starts. His previous high pitch count was 110 against Tampa Bay on May 20, 2018.

Stanton’s single in 11th lifts Yankees over Orioles 4-3

NEW YORK (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton led off the 11th inning with an RBI single Friday night and the New York Yankees came back to edge the Baltimore Orioles 4-3.

Stanton also homered as the Yankees remained 1 1/2 games ahead of Boston in the the race for the first AL wild card.

Stanton, who was limited to designated hitter duties during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and in his first 81 appearances this year, has played the outfield in 15 of his last 31 games, a span in which he is hitting .324 with 10 homers and 27 RBIs.

JDN OFFICE CLOSED MONDAY

The Jennings Daily News office will be closed Monday, Sept. 6, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

NEW ORLEANS TO GET POWER NEXT WEEK

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Power should be restored to almost all of New Orleans by Wednesday, 10 days after Hurricane Ida destroyed the electric gird, tearing down poles, transformers and even a massive steel transmission tower and leaving more than 1 million customers in Louisiana without power.

Not every customer will have power back in the city, utility Entergy said in a statement Friday. Customers with damage where power enters their home will need to fix it themselves, and there could be some smaller areas that take longer.

LDH gives COVID-19 update

Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) reported Thursday 2,099 new cases of COVID-19.

This makes the total number of COVID-19 cases in Louisiana 694,275 and the total number of cases in Jeff Davis Parish (JDP) 4,227.

There have been 74 new COVID-19 deaths across the state. The latest numbers put the total COVID-19 death count at 12,656 for Louisiana and 109 for Jeff Davis Parish. Since the LDH’s report on Monday, there has been one new death in Jeff Davis Parish.

SB introduces 2021-2022 operating budget

Jeff Davis School Board held a public meeting Thursday to introduce the upcoming fiscal year’s operating budget.

The 2020-2021 operating budget included $4.7 million in federal relief funds that will be utilized to recover from the negative effects of the pandemic on schools and students. The school board received the money in three phases. Held in an account by the Louisiana Department of Education, the money is reimbursed after documentation is provided by the school board.
