Library receives pandemic funding

Jeff Davis Parish Library received a special round of funding to help the library system further respond directly and immediately to the needs of the community as a result of the caoronavirus pandemic.

The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) awarded $3,012,150 to the State Library of Louisiana to be disbursed to state public libraries. The parish library received $32,150.77 of that funding.

Local groups collect supplies for Hurricane Ida victims

This weekend two local groups are teaming up to collect donations for victims of Hurricane Ida.

Bon Amie and Cajun Rider’s Club (CRC) will be at Tractor Supply in Jennings from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday to collect the donations.

“Our neighbors helped us so much during our time of need, we wanted to be able to give back,” said CRC Secretary Shanie Miller. “It was Bon Amie that started this and we joined in because we wanted to help.”

Yankees shortstop Torres activated after thumb injury

NEW YORK (AP) — Gleyber Torres was activated from the injured list Friday by the New York Yankees after missing almost a month with a sprained left thumb.

Torres is batting .253 with six homers and 42 RBIs in 99 games. He appeared to be heating up when he was injured while stealing second base against the Seattle Mariners on Aug. 9. The 24-year-old shortstop hit .393 with five RBIs and four doubles in 28 at-bats in eight August games, a span in which the Yankees went 6-2.

LaMarcus Aldridge comes out of retirement to rejoin Nets

NEW YORK (AP) — LaMarcus Aldridge rejoined the Brooklyn Nets on Friday, five months after having to retire because of an irregular heartbeat.

Aldridge retired in April after experiencing an irregular heartbeat in the last of the five games he played for the Nets. Aldridge was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome — an abnormality that can cause a rapid heartbeat — as a rookie in 2007.

Dodgers scratch lefty David Price from start with arm issue

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Dodgers lefthander David Price was scratched from his scheduled start Friday night in the opener of a key NL West series against the Giants because of an unspecified arm injury.

The injured list was a possibility, manager Dave Roberts said.

Corey Knebel was called into action to start in Price’s place as Los Angeles made it a bullpen game with the division race dead even. Both teams began the day at 85-49.

“It was something he’s been dealing with, but then it kind of came to a head more after his last start,” Roberts said of Price.

Use caution with added traffic from evacuees

Hurricane Ida caused billions of dollars in damage to the state, affecting the lives of millions of residents, whether they decided to stay and ride out the storm or chose to evacuate.

Despite the initial threat to southwest Louisiana, Hurricane Ida wobbled east, sparing Jeff Davis Parish from the storm. However, our roadways were flooded with a increase in traffic due to the storm.

Many chose to evacuate before the storm even approached landfall. Others are leaving now because of lack of utilities such as water, sewer and electricity or their home was severely damaged.
